FTA or Free To Air is usually used for FTA Satellite. The general term used for the new free terrestrial service is DTT.

FTA Satellite in Ireland typically applies to the FTA Satellite channels or FreeSat on Astra 28. These are all free and a Satellite Kit with a Satellite Dish pointed towards Astra 28 and Satellite STB (set top box). See http://www.freesat.co.uk/

Digital Terrestrial Television or DTT is terrestrial television, which broadcasts land based (terrestrial) signals. The purpose of digital terrestrial television is the reduced use of spectrum and more capacity than the older analogue televison, better-quality picture, and lower operatinig costs for broadcast and transmission after the initial upgrade costs. A terrestrial implementation of digital television technology uses aerial broadcasts to a conventional UHF aerial. However, you'll need a DTT TV suitable for the Irish signal (mpeg4) or a suitable DTT STB (set top box). The beauty of DTT is you'll need to receive only one signal and through that you'll get all of the Irish terrestrial channels. See http://www.digitaltelevision.ie for more information.
