I am doing a refurbishment projcet on a house and the builder has just started on site and he has found that all the existing ceilings to the ground floor are mdf with a plaster skim finish (with lots of recessed downlighters).

Has anybody ever come across the use of mdf instead of plasterboard? Is it acceptable or could it be considered dangerous? I'd be pretty sure its not fire rated/treated - or would have to assume so without evidence.

There is an MDF board available which is Class O resistant . That is surface spread of flame resistant .

    http://www.pbplywood.co.uk/medite-fire-retardant-mdf-to-euro-class-c.html

But it does not lend structural fire resistance to floors. It is not a substitute for plasterboard .

It is often correctly used where a timber floor has its fully intact plasterboard ceiling installed - then services cavity - then Class O MDF - routed "to design / pattern"
