Hi, my partner and I have just opened our first retail unit, but we haven't registered the business or anything like that yet.

Any free advice on how to get started would be appreciated. Not sure whether to register as a sole trader or limited company and how do we go about registering for tax and vat? We don't have any employees yet.........hope to in the future though.

    Thanks.

There is good information on Revenue.ie and CitizensInformation.ie - well worth a look if you have not already done so.

Easier set up option would be soletrader.
You need to register for tax using a TR1 form. Can be down loaded from www.revenue.ie
You will also need to register your business trading name with the companies registration office using an RBN1 form. Can be downloaded from www.cro.ie

    Hi No 1 Mom

First of all I would stay sole trader for the first few year registering a company is a bit more compliance and paperwork and therefore more bills.

to register a business name I would suggest the following

    Register yourself on Core

    https://www.core.ie/Main/index.jsp

This will allow you to file an RBN1 (Business registration form) for 20 euro half the price of filing the paper one.

Alternatively, go to http://www.cro.ie/ena/business-registration-business-name.aspx and print off the paper version and submit it with a cheque for €40.

Tax registration, If you were previously a PAYE worker you will need to register for both Income tax and VAT (VAT providing you are going to exceed the thresholds).

Good news is one form can do both and it is located here http://www.revenue.ie/en/business/popular-forms.html

It's the first form in the list form TR1.

You might want to have a read of the revenue's "running a business section" http://www.revenue.ie/en/business/running/registering-tax.html

After that you are pretty much there or thereabouts. I do this sort of stuff professionally so if you are stuck feel free to PM me and i will give you a dig out.

Cant really think of anything else except Congratulations on starting up.

Thanks folks, think we'll go down the sole trader route for now!

Now to find an affordable accountant
