Sitting Room Colour Scheme

Hi all - I'm just looking for an opinion in relation to couches...

We have a new build. Moved in before christmas last year but left the 'good room' for later. Am tempted to try to get it done before christmas this year and have some ideas. It's a large room - about 7.5 metres long by 4 metres wide, with conservatory type windows at one end and fireplace on short wall at top end beside door from hall. The house is quite 'old country style' sash windows, etc so I think that fabric couches would suit better than leather and the kids won't be allowed run riot in here, but I don't want it to be too 'period' either.

Anyway, I have seen some couch sets 4, 2, 1 etc in various colours and wondered is Black White Gold colourscheme likely to date quicker than cranberry/gold type scheme? Generally there's floral pattern on large couch and slightly different floral or stripe on other chairs. I'm kind of drawn to the black and white as I'd like to team it up with gold curtains, but is it 'classic' or likely to date and really annoy me in a few years? These suites cost a fortune so I don't want to even think about wanting to re-do the room for a long time.

Also - any opinion on whether you can put patterned carpet where you have a patterned couch? It's definitely going to be carpet and can't be plain cream....hubby is being patient about suite of furniture, but cream carpet would go too far in terms of impracticality!

    Thanks a million

    Hey,

Just my opinion of course but is cranberry / gold not kind of dated already?
I would definitely go with the black & white for a more classic feel. Also more practical if / when you do get fed up with the colour scheme as it will go with anything and you can revamp the room with a few accessories rather than go to the expense of changing everything again.

With regards to the carpet I really wouldnt go for a pattern. The idea is that you want your suite / curtains to stand out and too much fuss (particularly on the floor!) will draw the eyes away and almost give the room a messy / overbearing feel.

You could always go with a darker gold / beige carpet if you really dont want cream. The idea being that while matching the scheme in the room that your floor will showcase the other furnishings rather than draw attention away from them.
I know you said you wanted carpet but another idea would be to go with a wooden floor and since you're room is fairly big you could get a large rug that will tie in with the rest of your furnishings.

Hope this was of some help & good luck :)

The cover of this month's Period Living has a really lovely gold/red scheme on it - it has a wooden floor, large gold/red swirly rug, one beige/gold sofa, a red chair and a gold/red footstool/poofe. OK, it's a real classic look - however I really would have thought black is already dated - to me it screams eighties?

I put up a post looking for advice on kiddiproof stuff - was pointed to IKEA washable sofa covers and lo and behold they do a deep red cover.....so we are going for gold/red.

I think the dated/trendy think is one consideration but it will come down to personal opinion at the end of the day because personally I think black looks dated but the previous poster thinks it's not.....you have to choose what you like at the end of the day.
