Problem with USB driver

    Hi all,
Im having a problem lately with my USB ports that im hoping someone can help me with.
I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 and have Windows XP

My problem is that lately if i connect anything to my USB ports (memory Stick, new mouse etc...) a window comes up saying
'Welcome to the Found New Hardware Wizard'. It tells me I have to install software for whatever i have connected. I follow the steps to locate whatever software it needs and it keeps tell me that there has been a problem installing the hardware. 'An error has occurred during the installation of the device. The data is invalid'.
This has never happened before and memory sticks that ive previously used on the same laptop are no longer working on it.

I have followed the trouble shoot and it still hasn't fixed it. I have gone to control panel-administrative tools-computer management-usb drivers and have checked through each one and each device is working properly.
Im at a loss now as to what to do and what is wrong!! I bought a new mouse that just came in a box with no software and i cant use it!!!!

I hope someone can help and can supply more info if needed!

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the USB drivers?

Is XP up to date with service packs and all that?

    +1

    1)go to windows update http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
    2) install all updates,
    3) reboot,
    4) repeat 1-3 until there are no new updates

ya i had tried both of those. Reinstalling them just alloweed me to use one memory stick that id used before and hadn't let me use recently. That was it though. For everything else the message keeps coming up to install software for device. I had also tried updating everything - the driver software, every windows update that came through. Nothing has made a difference!

When you go into your Device Manager with nothing connected and scan for hardware changes, are any sections open with either a red X on the icon or a yellow exclamation triangle? Have you tried resetting your BIOS too?
