With the announcement of us getting 5% biofuel (ethanol) in the petrol in 2011(?) I was wondering would this have any impact on our older engines, I guess not, but any know for sure?

Isn't some / most / all unleaded petrol already 5% ethanol now?

You are correct, I'm going to answer my own question here with something I got from maxol.ie :

    What vehicles can use E5?

E5, which contains up to 5% bioethanol, can be used by drivers of standard petrol powered vehicles without modifications being required to engines while also protecting the manufacturer’s warranty. Maxol E5 Petrol fully meets the EU specification EN 228 for Unleaded in accordance with the terms of EU Fuel Directive EC 98/70 revised to provide for biofuel content in Unleaded Petrol. Maxol E5 will thus have the same fuel quality and integrity as standard unleaded petrol.

Depends on the materials used in the fuel system.

Apparently according to the pumps at my local maxol, their flexifuel E5 has 99 octane, better than the standard 95 octane petrol. So I'd say they're alot better for the older cars because of the higher octane
