    Hi Johnny K.

As the preceived wisdom is to mix your protein shake with water after a workout for faster absorbsion, then I wouldn't bother actually mixing it the night before.

I usually mix my protein powder, glucose, creatine and glutamine together in a sealabel sandwich bag and throw a couple of these into my gym bag. Then after a workout just pour the water into my shaker, add the protein mixture, shake and volia. Only takes about 1 minute :)

    Best Regards,

    M

The faster absorption is down to the solvent, not the time frame i.e. whey absorbs faster with water over milk b/c the milk casein slows down the whey (protein powder) absorption.

If you prepare a shake in advance just keep it refrigerated: room-temp protein solution will smell pretty bad in very little time (just leave a used shaker in your gym bag for a day or two, open, smell and see what the result is ;))

Keeping your mix in a sandwich bag is a great idea.

just to hi-jack this thread a bit i was wondering the same about some shakes that i make.

i throw some whey protein powder, porridge oats, fruit and water into a blender to make a healthy breakfast shake. i make about 5-6 shakes at once and then freeze them for the week, defrosting one each day.

so just wondering does this alter the nutrtitional value of any of the ingredients?? or the availabilty of the protein and nutrients??

    any info appreciated...

my reasons for throwing it in the fridge is im try to gain weight, and want a protein shake first thing in morning to have in the car! Same thing, i was wondering would leaving it over night affect the mixture? Thanks for the replies and advice.

With regards to the protein, no it won't affect it badly (reference). It shouldn't affect the other constituents either - we freeze veg and fruit all the time without detriment :)

I haven't done it in quite a while but I going by the smell that comes off my mixers if I leave them in my gym bag overnight I think you're best making them at the time you want to drink it.

This sentence only makes sense if you sleep in a fridge equipped car!

Seriously, how long does it take to throw a scoop of protein/oats/whatever into a shake and add water once you wake up? 30 seconds max?

If you mean including the banana/apple/orange in the shake too then I'd recommend just eating them normally. This will save you time setting up and cleaning the blender.

Alternatively get up 15 minutes earlier and have porridge or boiled/scrambled eggs. Sip the shake afterwards in the car. If you want to gain weight you should focus on food.
