Turbo Tyre Trouble

I bought this tyre from Wiggle to use with my new trainer. I'm having real trouble getting onto my wheel - Fulcrum Racing 7.

Along the tyre it reads "mount only on hooked rims", so perhaps this has something to do with it. How do I know if my rims are "hooked"?

Any advice would be very welcome!

Hooked rim = clincher rim, so the rim type shouldn't be an issue. Could try leaving the tyre near a radiator for a bit to soften it up a bit.

Hi there, those turbo tyres are always a nightmare to get on the rim. Try using a little warm soapy water on the tyre.

Everything I have read says they are a nightmare to get on. Any turbo tyre, not just that one. Steel tyre levers are recommended, I have read reports of plastic ones breaking.

Thanks all - thought I was being a pleb! I'll give it another go tonight and if that doesb't work I'll have to consider taking it, tail between my legs, to a LBS - oh the shame!

Put the tyre around your hot water tank for a while, and give it a good stretch before trying to fit again!
Be careful using steel tyre levers on your rims - they can be easily damaged struggling with turbo tyres.
Best bet is to have an old hack wheel just for turbo use.

when all is quiet about the kitchen - stick the tyre in the clothes dryer for a spell and then try it.

You mean when the woman of the house is out....:D

On a side note, I shared a house with this plank of a girl one time, and she broke the washing machine - washing all her rubber car mats in it!

Messed up. You have 2 problems...

    - Trainer tyres are inflexible and hard to put on.
    - Fulcrum wheels are hard to put most tires onto.

Your trainer tyre would probably fall onto a mavic wheel. I have fulcrum 5's which I was running continental tyres on. Could not get the tyres on or off easily so stuck them on some Mavic Kysriums. They went on easy. Point is that Fulcrum use a narrow, high rim that is at the outer limit of the industry tolerances. Good wheel, just a pain to change a tyre on unless you are using a soft tyre like the Michellin Prorace 2's which tend to go on a lot easier.

Bit of elbow grease will see you through. Perhaps some metal tyre levers too, which is what I resorted to carrying on the fulcrums.
