I've been living in Galway city for 3 years and am moving out to Oranmore soon. Just wondering what the craic is out there, Are there many "unsavoury characters" knocking around? is it a good spot to go out in?

If this is meant to be in the County Galway forum I apologise, not sure which is more relevant. Thanks.

Oranmore is fine to live and go out in. It's mostly a residential satellite village 15 mins away from Galway City. With it being so close to the city you can easily get a taxi home after a night out.

It has plenty of amenities OP; traffic a bit shocking to and from there morning and evening but how that affects you very much depends on the part of Oranmore you live in. Some say it can be rough at nighttime but I've never seen it. Great for travel to Dublin and Limerick too:)

There's a chipper/pizzeria in the centre of the village that does fantastic pizza

I did the same thing about 4 years ago and never regretted it. Fab little town with plenty of places to eat out, Indian, Chinese, Italian, Chippers, Pub grub etc, get a pint, go bowling or watch a movie and loads more besides. Perfectly safe to go out for pints and walk home afterwards. I have lived here for 4 years and never once witnessed any hassle or felt the town was unsafe with dodgy characters.

The traffic can be bad at rush hour times, 8-9am and 5-6.30pm as all the traffic from Loughrea, Craughwell etc comes through going to and coming home from work. However the new motorway is opening in a matter of weeks so that will undoubtedly reduce it drastically as all that traffic will now be dumped at the roundabout at Doughishka. I work in Oranmore anyway so the traffic is not an issue for me. There is a bus stop outside the town centre too which with Bus lanes will have you in Eyre square in 15/20min.

I'd highly recommend it to you.

Thanks for the replies guys, i'm liking what I'm hearing about it! Had a feeling traffic would be a problem, but I work in Renmore so at least I'm on the right side of the city for work :)

pubs are grand but can't recommend the ramadan if you are lookng for somewhere to stay. rooms average, service wojus.

that hotel is spelled ramada...just so people know, its not named after the ninth month in the islamic calendar...never been in there.

living in oranmore since 1999. there used to be a few characters, but they've moved on to greener pastures now.
oran is ok when your going out but there seems to be the same crowd all the time. maybe thats just me though.
For an 18 y.o I prefer the city. i grew up in the town and i think its a fair bit parochial. but for anyone else not looking to spread their wings, theres no better town.

A couple of things regarding Oranmore. The new M6 will open late next year and ease traffic considerably in and around the village. Secondly it is possible to get a townhouse (2 bed, 2 bathroom) for less than 200k; a three bedroom semi for 250k and a four bedroom for less than 300k. There are over 200 properties for sale in the Oranmore area at the moment so there is plenty of choice and bargaining potential. Best of luck.

I'd add to that, if you wait for 3-6 months on buying anything you'll get an even better deal.

The M6 is opening in 2months time (Jan 4th I think) and will be interesting to see what happents to the traffic

Traffic will be great; until it hits Doughiska and beyond; whereupon it will simply haemorrhage most likely, bottleneck style.

I'm just moving out after being here for 2.5 years.

Nothing too bad to say about the place, just I don't do any of my 'living' here and I'm sick of driving in and out of town.

What was your difficulty with "living" in Oranmore? Presume you socialised in the city more so than Oranmore but it is not exactly a crap drive in.

The drive can take anywhere from 7 mins (Sunday Morning) to 30-45mins. All depends on time of day and route taken.

Oranmore can be quite clique, I didn't find it easy making friends here (but that may have been more me than them).
