Bought a new unused GM Bushcrafter knife on the For Sale Forum a few weeks ago used it today for the first time to gut a deer. Washed the Knife in warm water and it became badly stained, the colour ran from the handle, and the steel blackened. Anybody come across this happening, I have also e-mailed GM.

Blood is very corrossive, so it looks like that you have gotten some staining due to the blood not being washed off in time!-I always wash my hands and knife immeditely after gralloching, we carry 5 gallon of water in the back of the landrover with some soap for the job. At a guess you may be able to have it buffed off the blade, but try cleaning the blade with toothpaste first, it might just work. Some of the serious knife guys would have probably seen this before though.

Ive made a few knives in the last five months and at a guess the steel on your knife is 01 carbon steel which needs to be cleaned after use and dried straight away other wise it will tarnish and if left long enough it will start to pit..... Unfortunately that is its downfall...But 01 steel is able to hold a serious edge...much better than any stainless knife you can get off the shelf...as far as the handle goes im not sure of the material its made of..cant help you there...

If you have a polishing mop on a bench grinder that will get the blade cleaned up..if not get some chrome polish(the stuff you can get for car bumpers) and it will clean up...

Another tip for ya...dont leave the knife in the sheath when finished your stalk as it will tarnish the blade espesially if the sheath is damp...

And never put the knife in a dish washer....

Any questions give me a pm or davey moore who made the raffled knife on here a while back....

That reminds me...I have just got back from a stalk and must give my knife a clean...cheers

As suggested toothpaste may brighten it up,
or you can use baking soda with a little water cleaning with a toothbrush,
but to be honest the tarnish is a normal occurance with carbon steel knives,
if you want an untarnished blade you have to go with stainless, but carbon are easier to sharpen and hold an edge better.

The handle is a different story, did you leave it soaking in the sink ?

    Dvs.
