Have got two of these and neither work - flahing red lights - refuse to pair up.

Is this a common problem with unofficial PS3 controller or am I just unlucky?

Jesus didn't know that. Just as lousy as MS and the unofficial storage devices tbh.

On first look it seems a bit crap from Sony but on the other hand, these devices are untested and unsanctioned by Sony. Why should developers have to get licenses to produce software for PS3 when rogue people are developing hardware?

The other issue is that the only people who win here are retailers. They buy them in really cheap and mark it up a huge amount while they probably make very little on the official stuff.

Another problem is WHEN (in my experience) they fail, or are just crap in general, users will go on a mad rant. Not against Mad Catz or whatever, against Sony...

There really is no benefit to Sony in having them around. Kind of like Apple cutting out un-registered hardware syncing with iTunes.

I have always preferred the offical controller. But memory cards, steering wheels etc all have their fans and simply provide choice.

I mean what benefit was it for Sony to not lock the HDDs so you could only buy one they make?

The 'Rogue' label you use is a little harsh for some of the genuinely quality third-party manufacturers. Wireless controllers were available for the PS2 and the one I bought worked absolutely perfectly, ditto with the Max Drive. I think it is very harsh to put them all in the same category.

I never said all of them were bad quality, but they ain't official... thus they're "rogue" devices in my books.

As for the comment about HDD's in the PS3, they're not "locked down" to a proprietary brand or type because the PS3 uses standard conventions to interface with the HDD, i.e. SATA. I imagine the rules governing SATA drives say you can't lock the technology down if you're going to use it - and it's probably the best technology available to Sony at a reasonable price.

If MS weren't charting an arm and a leg for their hard disks, it would cost them a bomb to manufacture those things because they have to be tailor-made, rather then using off-the-shelf components that every other machine in the world uses.

Well, there are a million bluetooth devices that don't work with the PS3, right? Do you reckon the use of certain HDD technology stops Sony locking down their Hard Drives but not their use of Bluetooth?

I don't know but I guess it is just speculation on whether or not the HDDs could be locked to a Sony configuration.

All that aside, you can understand why they do it from a money-grabbing point of view but I still feel the erosion of choice is always a bad thing especially when you look at the price some of the official peripherals go for.

I am surprised it wasn't possible to lock out other peripherals on the PS2 and PS1.

The difference being a HDD is just a storage device that Sony doesn't make themselves anyway while Bluetooth devices control the fundamental way you interact with the console.

They could fairly easily using software mods and of course without giving an easy way to swap it out... but it's not Sony's business to make HDD's.

Well thats a difference alright but, by your own admission, you only think that Sony wouldn't be able to lock the HDDs becasue of the sata use, no?

I can't imagine it being a huge leap - I am sure they wouldn't be as competitive in price. Can you still use an unofficial SFIV Arcade Stick?

Will SONY's new restrictions get rid of those modded controllers and boosters that some on line players clearly use ?
The new restrictions have my tumbs up if it gets rid of these.

I'm still stuck with a sixaxis! I want to get a Dualshock. I'd never use non-Sony controllers in the first place.

I remember plugging my PC game pad into the PS3 and it worked, which really impressed me. They've removed this now have they? Feckin hell :mad:
