A gunman was at large after firefighters and police responded to the report of a shooting at a high-rise building, said John Tormos of the Orlando Fire Department.

A spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Office, which is helping the city police department, said investigators are looking for a man wearing a blue Polo shirt, gray vest and blue jeans.
"We're in a search mode for the gunman," said Jim Solomons, a spokesman for the sheriff's office.

Ah but it happens in europe just as frequently I'm sure.

My mother works in the building next to the one where the shooting happened. Her building has been locked down, and when I called the background was very chaotic. My brother's also a firefighter for the city of Orlando, so there will be some interesting family chats in the days to come!

if we could have better access to guns however...

    Ahh for fuck sake.

I don't care what anyone says about it happening 'just as much in Europe'. You can't deny every time this happens in America it's a pretty strong argument against them 'bearing arms'.

Canadians are armed to the hilt (by European standards) as well and yet how often do such events occure there?

Not 100% sure on this, but I'm pretty postive the Swiss have gun possesion statistics similar to the Americans yet the gun crime there isn't even a dot on Americas.

Yeah, but the Canadians are just too boring and nice to want to do this sort of thing, besides, half of them are French and know how to run away quickly at the sound of gunfire.

A little perspective is needed also...

    Canadian Population - 33,000,000
    American Population - 300,000,000

But yes I do agree this never happens in Canada! :)

I'm told by my friends who were on lockdown that they found the guy and the lockdown has been lifted. Apparently he was at home. Either way, big relief for me.

Why would my brother be the shooter? The shooter was a former disgruntled employee of the office, not an employee of government services. My brother was on scene doing his job as an emergency responder...

If every shooting that happens in the US had a thread here boards would need its own forum for it, we're talking about nut jobs going on shooting sprees. Not gangland shootings.

Yeah it happens in other countries, but if I was a betting man I'd bet that the next 1st world country to pull one of these things again would be the US.

Its just the way Americans are. Theres a reason the GTA games are based in the US, GTA Sweden would be pretty boring.

No if we were talking about that, this would be in the Psychology or Expand your Horizons forum and we'd actually be tackling the question. Instead a news article has been tacked up for posters to draw mustaches onto.

Killing sprees are not tied to one incident or one country. Why should we revolve the issue around one incident in one place?

If you wish to really discuss that matter start a new Thread and I'd gladly join you.

i would say its the heat
Well I wouldnt deny the Humidity down in Florida is unbearable to the point of crazy sometimes id like to think its something more substantial than that. Florida is a hot spot (-pun) for gun violence. And hatecrime for that matter. I sincerely doubt its any one factor though im sure the top 3 are Education, Economy and Gun Control. But then guns arent always a factor. I've been 2 friend/family connections apart from a guy who got himself and his cat beat to death by his landlord - using a claw hammer. Write that down in the top 50 of Worst Ways to Go.

when i was in orlando last year in april twice the temperatures went into the mid teens and cloudy (twas great because nobody was riding the water rides in universal, no queues :p)

been there in july too, i don't find orlando too bad heat wise, its a city like vegas equipped to deal with heat with airconditioning in even the crappiest motels and those water sprayers everywhere and of course pools, now 100 degrees+ in somewhere like san francisco or paris (where i was on the hottest day in both cities history june 2000 and august 2003) is a freaking nightmare

Orlando is a really nice place.I think one thing that is really sad about this is that Orlando is supposed to be a kids paradise and then this happens.I hope it wasn't near Disney world and that no kids saw it happen.

& lol @ the americans trawling through the internet trying to find shootings in Europe as if it some how the alters the fact that this is a massive massive problem in America. I mean this is the 2nd one THIS WEEK in the US, "Zomg look, one happened in Scotland 13 years, so its okay...we're not any worse then anyone else... now excuse me while I go play with my guns."

With the one exception of Dunblane (countered by the one exception of Colombine), all my examples were post-2000. For the record, I didn't need to trawl the Internet for the incidents, I tend to keep abreast of such things. If you are unaware of such incidents in Europe, that's your problem. Everyone's heard of Virginia Tech. How many people have heard of Erfurt? It's not a new problem, it goes back years at least to the start of modern media in the 1960s. Again, I think it's a perception issue. The name 'Charles Whitman' is one which rings bells amongst many people, even if they don't know why. But we've all seen footage from U-Texas, Austin 1966 on the History Channel of people scrambling for cover out of line of fire of the bell tower. Nobody was around to film Seifert (and yes, even I had to look up his name) when he used his flamethrower to kill eight children, one teacher, and stabbed a second to death in a Cologne elementary school in 1964. Probably a large reason almost nobody's heard of the incident even though, in modern terms, both are about the same age and, frankly, I think the German one was far more brutal.

You may be correct that the US has a problem of people who snap and kill at random. If so, it is a problem which is shared by Europe, Canada, and probably a bunch of other countries we never hear about.

Now, excuse me, while I go play with my guns. At least I acknowledge the issue.

    NTM

This was one guy, subsequently caught.......Barely a peep of reportage in Europe by comparison....
Six members of a single family were found stabbed to death in a partially burned-out apartment in Rishon Lezion on Saturday morning, in a multiple homicide that has left the country reeling from the scope and brutality of the murders.

Bad people do bad things, usually with whats to hand....blaming the tool is a bit of a dead end.
