    For short term cover.

    http://www.keo.co.za/2009/11/06/munster-loan-cheetahs-prop/
Cheetahs loosehead Wian du Preez has signed a two-month deal with Irish club Munster.
Du Preez was the form loosehead in the Currie Cup this season and was part of the Cheetahs’ front row that was considered the best scrumming force in the competition.
However, he was a shock exclusion from the Springbok squad for the end-of-year tour.
Munster, who are struggling with a prop injury crisis, have now approached Du Preez to help bolster their front row.
‘The deal has been sealed and I will be leaving next weekend for two months,’ Du Preez told keo.co.za. ‘It will be a great experience. In the last three years, Munster have won the European Cup twice. So it’s good to know I’ll be playing for one of Europe’s powerhouses.’
Du Preez added that he is looking forward to featuring alongside players like Springbok centre Jean de Villiers.
‘It will be great to meet up with an excellent player like Jean. There are also many British and Irish Lions and other internationals in the squad, so I will learn a lot during my time there.’
Forwards coach Barend Pieterse said he is happy Du Preez has received this opportunity.
‘Wian is already a good player and he will only get better,’ said Pieterse. ‘It’s a shame he didn’t get a Springbok call-up, but this will be a great experience for him.’
Du Preez is expected to feature in five European Cup matches and three Irish League games. The prop will return on the 25 January, in time for the Cheetahs’ Super 14 preparations.

It was expected that we sign someone really. If Horan has a long stay out we'd be down to Kilcoyne on the bench if another person got injured after Hayes comes back.

More importantly, he may be able to give some of our younger props some scrummaging tips.

Thank you whoever fixed the title.

Good signing - how many Johny foreigners is that now?

    1. JdV
    2. Mafi
    3. Howlett
    4. Williams
    5. Warwick
    6. Morland
    7. Brugnaut
    8. du Preez

I could be missing someone. But only 4 of those start when everyone is fit and 2 of them are heading on within the next few months.

    9. Manning.

Will this prop be eligible for the H Cup games in December?

    Manning is Irish qualified.

I know the injuries are mounting but that's a lot of foreigners.

True, but prop is such a specialist position I don't think we have any other choice. Kilcoyne was on the bench and he's not even in the academy so I wouldn't be confident bringing a player on that's not even a full professional.

Don't think he can play in the Heineken cup,

Not suprised being honest. Injuries have mounted and we have no choice. And like it was mentioned earlier, maybe he can teach the younger lads a thing or two.

Yeah scrummaging is a dark art alright. But you'd wonder though... it's not as if any of the provences are boomimg with props.

Sometimes I wonder would it make sense to convert someone like Leamy to a Prop. Hayse and Corrigan were both originally second rows.

Thats an interesting idea. Would rather try and convert Nick Williams to play prop though.

i wonder if Munster had considered taking a prop from another province on loan, someone like Ronan McCormack

anyone know what stephen knoop is up to?

I just couldn't see that happening.

Peter Bracken who don't forget played with Wasps might have something the IRFU don't like about him.

Covering their own propping injury crisis on a short term deal until the new year I think.

Still holds the bench press record in the GP

Saw him play for the Dragons a few weeks ago, couldn't push a tire down a hill.

In fairness to the guy, he wasn't planning on playing any pro rugby this season. He's not doing too badly all things considered.

Munster have a bit of a propping crisis at the moment, good move to bring someone in. Has Hayes ever been injured!!! He's a miracle man!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,249 ✭✭✭Stev_o

Meh i wouldn't dwell on it all major teams do the same even Leinter incase some people want to be high and mighty about the whole foreigner thing. Hopefully he can make a great impact for Munster, considering how well the Cheetahs got on at scrum time in the CC he should prove a real asset for them.

Converting Leamy to prop forward, sure thing lets throw him into the scrum at the top level!

    He was seriously needed

Its amazing Munster didn't have sufficient cover I mean Horan, Hayes, Buckley, Brugnaut simply isn't enough cover especially considering Hayes and Horan's age and Buckley's proness to illness/injuries. I mean in the situation that 3 of Leinster's props would get injured I'd still be reasonably ok with McCormack and Ross starting and McGrath on the bench but if I was in Munster's situation the thought of Archer and Kilcoyne would scare me to no end I mean these lads are only academy players and fairly average at that how the IRFU expected Munster to cope with such losses is unreal.

"Still holds the bench press record in the GP"

Yeah, we've got a scrawny looking wing who holds that record in our club, good for FA except getting sent off for fighting...

    ie Means nothing.

Rocky Elsom held the bench press record at Leinster, if nothing else it means the player is extremely powerful.

I saw him in Galwegians just b4 this, and i have to agree. About the only good decision Michael Bradley made while in Galway.

Dave Ryan and Darragh Hurley are both very talented players, unfortunately both are injured at the minute, too, Munster couldn't have predicted they would get injured though.

Forgot about Hurley actually. Ryan I'm not so sure of.

Ryan can cover both sides, younger brother of Tim Ryan with the added bonus of actually being ok in the scrum. Injured until Jan though.

Hurley is a walking injury, infact he got injured (again) after coming off the bench against Treviso.

How often in rugby do you use that motion in a game?? I'd much prefer somebody with a record deadlift. In about two years rugby will start focusing less on free weights and more on kettle bells

I'd much rather my prop held the squat, deadlift or any weightlifting record i.e., clean.

Yeah, it's a huge pity because he could be an incredible loosehead. Same with the Munster scrumhalf, Duncan Williams. Injuries have really cost those two guys so much time. I suppose it's getting increasingly unlikely that either of them will reach their full potential, despite both being young enough guys.

    http://www.keo.co.za/2009/11/07/bittersweet-blow-for-boks/
Cheetahs duo Wian du Preez and Adriaan Strauss, who should have been included on this tour ahead of Steenkamp and Ralepelle by weight of performance in the Currie Cup, will now join the Boks.

He's been called up to the Boks squad. In a way not surprising considering the performances of the props against Leicester but I hope this won't affect the deal.

They've obviously caught someone good so. I don't see why it should affect the deal - Munster have no games while the Boks are playing anyway. This will just serve to possibly keep him match fit.

remember hearing in Cian Healy's first weights session with Leinster he beat the benchpress record

    Reportedly he's coming back: http://www.sport24.co.za/Rugby/CJ-heading-back-to-SA-20100524

Wian is a great prop, but I find the signing strange. Munster have promising Irish LHs, and Wian is far too good not to be played. It may well be a signing with the two prop bench in mind, but will limit Dave Ryan in particular, and Darragh Hurley if he can regain fitness.

Regardless, TH is the real issue for Munster and Ireland. Hard to know what the PAG are up to with props. Botha, VDL, Du Preez. Sooner or later Ireland have to produce their own props.

We had a TH play in the second half of a European Cup final on Sunday, also regulary enough getting game time for one of the top scrummaging outfits in France, unfortunately probably no chance to come home as he would just be 3rd choice TH behind Mushy and Hayes, madness.

Yeah timmy did well when he came on.
His body shape has changed since he went to Toulon-looks a much fitter, mobile player & his scrummaging has improved.
I wonder would him & Sean Cronin be lured back to Munster in a year or two?

You're dreaming if you think he'll wait that long at Connacht.

And he won't move to Munster while Flannery is still there.

Personally, I think he'd start ahead of Flannery from day one, if he moved to Munster, but the two guys don't get on so I think the Munster management would be wary of having them competing directly against each other for the place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,698 ✭✭✭Risteard

Don't know how to feel about this tbh.

Obviously he's a good scrummager and I felt he did very well for us this seaosn, considering Hayes was usually struggling but we have Dave Ryan coming through and I was hoping he'd get more game time next season and hopefully overtake Horan.

I think there's 2 props on the bench next season? If so then it's understandable but you'd have to think TH would have been a priority. Looks like the writing is on the wall for Marcus in any case.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,433 ✭✭✭✭thomond2006

I wonder if they are considering converting Dave Ryan to TH...

He won't get much gametime at loosehead next season and I'm guessing the MB had the Du Preez deal wrapped up before they offered him a full contract.

Really? never heard that one before.

Off topic, is anyone any the wiser about the conspiracy link between the Joe.ie (hardy bucks/munster lads) vid and the lads dropped to the bench against Leinster?

flannery's body wont last much longer than the world cup, am suprised munster didnt get him back for next season given the shocking lineout anytime flannery's been injured. Varley's a decent sub i guess, dennis fogarty for all his good work around the paddock must be the worst lineout thrower in world rugby.

top quality signing for Munster, am just waiting to see if George Smith is signed...

is timmy ryan on a 1 or 2 year deal at Toulon?

Cronnin signed a 1 year deal with Connacht so there till next summer and he will be going to the world cup in Autumn 2011 so, he might not even transfer next summer either.
