I suspect this might infringe upon copyrights and boards.ie here are strict about NOT advocating breaking those rights.
Google or yahoo search engine - even download.com, might be of use to you.

Isn't it perfectly legitimate to back up stuff you own?
You're just not alowed to circulate it.

DVD Shrink is good and it's free, you can get it here.

If you want to go a step further and convert into Divx/Xvid there is a guide here.

Afaik it's fine to backup DVD's as long as you own them.

    Nope still illegal.

We got into a debate on the "surely one copy of each DVD you own is allowed." unfortunately it's seen as illegal.

Its illegal to backup commercial DVDs, but it should be okay to backup your own DVDs like wedding videos, grannies funeral etc.

Personally I find DVD Shrink a little outdated so I use DVDFab - they have some paid apps for converting movies, but actually the ripper is free.

Bear in mind that a ripped DVD will usually be around 4-6GB even with extra languages and menus discarded. So as recommended above, you might decide to covnert them down to a smaller file.

Hence the need for new 21st century copyright laws.. I mean it's ridiculous to think that you legally can't backup your OWN DVD's esp. seen as as the DVD format is extremely vulnerable to wear and tear !

DVDShrink no1 choice, even after all these years, failing that, DVDFab.
