I'm thinking about buying the wireless adapter and Xbox Live subscription but firstly I need to know if Eircom's 3Mb bb is good enough for gaming.

How do people find it? Would it be ok for Live?

I had it before I upgraded to 7mb. Worked perfectly for me. Should be fine. Happy gaming.

    Same as that.

Some people found that going from 3 to 7mb gave them better speed (as you'd expect), but worse ping rate (the important part for gaming). This is what's holding me back from an upgrade. Do a search in this forum for ping and you'll get a good idea of the options for different service providers. Some aspects will always be out of your control – distance from the exchange/line quality.

Yeah, those pings look v. good. Although I think they will rise when you add wireless connection. Someone here will be able to describe the increase involved. I'm guessing this would only be an issue if your pings were already over 100.

I've got 3mb eircom broadband and a wireless adapter and it's always given me a great connection on Live. Go for it.

Don't do it man! i had it before, btw,the best i got on a good day was 2Mb if i was lucky, got alot of lag and nat problems, got UPC 10Mb yesterday and so far no problems, not to mention alot cheaper :)

With Eircom it depends on how close you are to the exchange and how good your router is. In theory the 3mb should work fine for online play.
I play with people on all connections available in this country and some of the 3mb eircom connections are better then mine a 3mb(Bt) and some of them are not worth the steam off my piss. One thing to keep in mind is all connections have their ups and downs.
Also if you can have your setup so the xbox is close to the router you can connect it through the ethernet cable instead making the connection quicker and more reliable, Also saving you a few quid on the wireless adapter which is way over priced.

I am slightly confused about the need for a wireless adaptor. Connecting through an Ethernet solves the consistency issue and delivers better speed.

Rather than spending the money on a wireless adapter you could consider running the connection through the sockets and connecting via cables. This should be a cheaper and faster option. It also doubles up as way to download large files quicker to a laptop that’s not directly connected to the router.

    An example is here: http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=48539&TabID=1&C=SO&U=strat15&MenuName=Devolo%20High-Speed%20Networking%20Over%20the%20Mains

That one is expensive. I got some in LIDL a few months back for €30. Don't use it for the Xbox though. Would be interested in hearing if anyone has experience with it.

Theoretically a 512mb connection is plenty for gaming,i used to game perfectly well on 56k :)
It all comes down to how good your line is and your location in relation to the exchange etc.

I tried it out last night by setting up a new account and moving the modem to where the console is. It worked very well. I'll be buying that adapter now.
The only thing that didn't turn out so well was me constantly dying in COD4. :o
