Im not sure if this should be in the swimming forum, move if so, but its in the context of fitness so...

I was told swimming can improve posture significantly, is this true? I often find myself slouching and sometime it irks my back doing it, so will swimming a couple of times a week give me a more naturally straight posture?

I would also like to build more muscle if possible, can swimming achieve this?

Any advice on how many lengths, what kind of swimming and on off days or after workouts would be great, the pool at my gym is 20m.

Swimming can help with shoulder flexibility. If you are doing lots of front crawl this may lead to sore shoulders, as you are constantly internally rotating and pull your shoulders forward into more of a slouch. You need to stretch and do train the opposing muscles.

Swimming alone will not build massive amounts of muscle. You would need to spend time in the gym.

Depending on your current fitness try start off with two days a week. Gradually increase the lengths from 1 to many. Alternate strokes. Do sets of maybe 8 with breaks between them. You are better off doing 3 sets of 8 lengths with good form rather than a straight set of 24 with sloppy form towards the end as you tire. If you focus on good technique it will soon become second nature.

A good book on technique is "Total Immersion". You can also find many youtube clips with the same title.

Hheh, I meant I hurts my back to slouch, not swim. This would be combined with gym also.

    Very useful information, cheers.
