So whats your favourite chiptune from the past. We'll limit this to TG-16 as the most complex machine to take the tune from. Only one tune per post although you can post multiple times.

I'm going to have to go with this classic from Simons Quest:

It's still one of my favourite castlevania tunes and has appeared in nearly every castlevania since. I'm trying to learn it on the guitar but it's a bitch and it doesn't help that I suck at guitar and I'm a beginner.

I could listen to the intro music from Nemesis the Warlock for the c64 forever

There's just so many.... so to start Here's the 'Ocean loader v4'

If you don't remember this.... you never owned a Commodore 64

Midnight Resistance also on the c64. The Title screen music is ok but when I played it for the first time and heard the Lv1 tune....magic!

The theme music to Agent X on the Speccy was impressive, but mostly because it got multi-channel sound from the hideous beeper the spectrum had, music for I-Ball was similarly done, not a patch on the C64, but an impressive piece of work by programmers who had to work hard to get results.

And as for theme music, or at least the entire sonic suite of sounds, I nominate Uridium, my favourite shooter ever...

    Nemesis the Warlock,

    BEST

    COMIC

    EVER!

I was going to get a tattoo based on the god of Khaos himself, him and the ABC Warriors.
    Thanks for reminding me!

I remember Sanxion having some good music too.

Actually while on the subject of megaman 2, I think I prefer the main title theme:

The Load Music from Turrican on the C64 and also from Myth. The complete versions of which I could not easily locate on youtube. Will check again later.

The "attract" screen on Flimbo's Quest on C64 (not the first intro, but when it's showing you the high scores and the level and stuff)

No access to youtube now will try to find it later

The first tune on this screen!

OK I know that's cheating, being the Amiga one, but I can't find it on C64 and the tune is the same

That game had such a good soundtrack on such terrible sound hardware, it should never have been possible.

    Loved Duck Tales!
Sticking with NES themes, Nintendo World Cup had some great music:

Am I the only one who remembers that ocean loader sounding a little different? I distinctly remember it from Batman Returns (I think it was) on the C64 with the graphics for it in the background.

It sounded a bit different to the one in the YouTube link tho.. anyone got a link to it running on the original hardware?

Might be a 50/60hz difference causing slower/faster sound?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,258 ✭✭✭MrVestek

No, it seems the one I was talking about was v5 of the Ocean loader. Used to hear this when playing 'Batman the Movie'.

It's similiar but uses different midi instruments methinks. Brings back good memories. Why did my mother ever force me to give away my C64?*:-(

Has anyone else notice a lot of 8-bit style chip tunes being used in pop culture lately?

Just saw an add for a new Samsung phone and it had some music that sounds as if it came from a NES/Gameboy.

there's a whole bitpop movement too.

    Anamanaguchi are alright

They use a hacked nes hooked up to a laptop

    Anamanaguchi are good alright.

There are absolute rake of fantastic chiptune artists out there. Nullsleep, USK, RushJet1, Psilodump, I could go on and on. After listening to them for a while it always puts me in the mood to put on actual videogame soundtracks. Mercs and Megaman 2 are two which get played a hell of a lot!

What I was talking about is stuff in popular media. I've seen a few ads lately with a lot of blips and bloops in them. There's another one (Think it's an ad for meteor) with a little guy running along. I've also noticed a few pop songs with this featuring in them too. Many it's to go with all the 80's fashion ****e we've been seeing recently.

I'm another person who has fond memories of the C64. As Turrican, Sanxion and the Ocean Loader in its various forms have already been mentioned, I thought I'd bring up some other tunes I loved:

    Nightbreed

The game itself wasn't all that good but the intro tune was great. Scroll to 1:04 in the video to get to it.

    Creatures.

    Creatures 2

In fact, I loved pretty much every tune Steve Rowlands did. The same can also be said for Martin Galway and Rob Hubbard.

In case anyone doesn't know about it, check out the High Voltage SID Collection. It features over 36,000 popular and requested SIDs from the Commodore 64. It's quite a trip down memory lane :).

Yes, I have thought the same. Lady Gaga and Pokerface springs to mind.

My own favourites, all Atari 8-bit:

Jebus...How weird is it to hear music playing throught a match in Microprose Soccer? Bloody distracting!

How could I forget Sly Spy Secret Agent! The first 4 or 5 levels have some of the greatest C64 music ever... Can't seem to find a decent youtube clip of it though... And I can't find an emulator of it that isn't a tape file (the emulator even emulates the tape loading time!)

I'd like to know where I can get a C64 emulator that emulates the tape loading. I want my Ocean Intro sequences dammit!
