Endura long sleeve merino base layer for €35...
been wearing the last couple of days. Wool is king. Keeps you warm, keps you cool, keeps you dry. There are a really nice fit, and really comfortable. Great price for a top piece of winter kit.
Also free postage from Chain reaction!!! hurrah!

I ordered one of these earlier in the week, hasn't arrived yet so I can't comment on it.

    +1 on the Helly Hansen.

Wool is mentioned alot, even just thinking of wearing something made of wool is giving me goose pimples and setting my teeth on edge. Do you get the same feeling as wearing a woolly jumper ? I can't stand the thoughts of wearing anything made from wool, probably goes back to when I was a kid and went to chew my collar of a wool jumper, argh :(

You should be okay, just don't chew your base layers.

I got a few of these Merino ones and am seriously impressed. Hard to beat that price for merino.

If you are looking for cheap as chips hard to beat this Infil one from PBK. Only downside is it is a little scratchy. Good for the likes of commuting.

None of these suggestions will help of course if you need it for this weekend.

Would just one of these suffice under a winter jacket?

In some weather conditions, certainly, depends on the jacket and how cold it is. I am generally in a LS base layer, LS jersey and light-ish breathable jacket these days.

I am very impressed by the complete lack of any smell from the merino. You could wear it for a week commuting.

Also it is very comfortable and not itchy. It is warmer than any of my other base layers but doesn't seem to get sticky. I do feel warm while going up a hill though.

I meant to say under a jersey, under a jacket.

May have to invest in some Merino baselayers so, the synthetic stuff I have is fine for now, but not for deepest winter.

Shame those Trekmates are sold out.

They aren't sold out, 0 in stock but 2-7 days means they are coming back if you are M or XL. I am M. They went to 0 in stock and came back before. I reckon you would fit in a M, it is not crazy tight on me, I wanted something that would double up for use down the pub etc. after a cycling trip.

Depends on how heavy your jacket is I suppose.

The last two mornings I wore a short-sleeved nike pro baselayer (which is supposed to keep you cool) under a heavy winter jacket and still have to open the jacket sometimes.

Wool doesn't grow on trees, you know.

Although, as sheep go, I have to say that's a pretty good looking sheep. :o

In case you didn't see my link above:

... if you're looking for one in a hurry. €10 more than the Trekmate, but free delivery and in stock right now.

I work as a courier and this is the first top I have been able to wear for more than 1 day without stinking... quite amazing really, 3 full 9 hour days and not a whiff! Also, no itching at all, all flatlocked stitching and feels grand against the skin. I'm gonna invest in another one methinks.

How does Merino compare to wearing multiple synthetic layers?

@dubmess cheers, not in a mad rush, so I'll wait for the Wiggle ones.

(I'm also looking for a buff, haven't seen one I really like yet. I have a picture on my desk of a Xacobeo Galicia squad wearing natty blue Etxeondo buffs. Nice. Similar to this:

Was in looking today, limited range of colours, although they had a nice merino one, only in black or grey.

You mean you want one which does not yet exist?

Well, I wouldn't mind finding a stockist of those Etxeondo buffs, for example.

There's a Jelly Belly one for sale here

    That's almost ironic.

Army Bargains on Capel St. have cheap buffs. I got a decent one for 6 euro.
