    BOOKA SHADE Biog

Berlin-based producers and live act Booka Shade leapt to the forefront of contemporary dance music in 2005 with their classic singles “Body Language” (with M.A.N.D.Y.) and “Mandarine Girl”. Three years later they show no signs of slowing down as 2008 is proving to be a huge year for Arno Kammermeier and Walter Merziger.

The highlight of the year has been the long awaited release of their third studio album in May, entitled The Sun & The Neon Light. The single "Charlotte" has proven to be another hit for the band and reached #2 on the Beatport Chart. They are currently delivering their music live and direct to fans on a new world tour, proving themselves to be one of the biggest and most exciting electronic live acts in the world. This summer they have played at many of the most renowned festivals; Glastonbury in the UK and Coachella and Lollapalooza in the US. 2008 has been a successful year for the duo in many ways, demonstrated at The Beatport Music Awards where they won 'Best Tech House Artist'. In February they released Movements Tour Edition, which is comprised of the original 2006 hit album „Movements“ and a new live DVD, We Came To Dance, featuring a live show filmed at Belgium’s Pukkelpop Festival last year in front of 12 000 fans, a tour documentary and some bonus tracks.

Last year, Booka Shade completed their mammoth Movements world tour, a staggering 150 shows over the course of 20 months. The tour saw Walter and Arno win over crowds at clubs and festivals around Europe, Australia, North and South America. They have also captivated and conquered diverse audiences from The Montreux Jazz Festival to the Virgin Rock Festival, Gemany's biggest rock festival 'Rock Am Ring' and Detroit Electronic Music Festival demonstrating their musical depth and versatility. Combined with Get Physical, the label they co-run with M.A.N.D.Y and DJ T, they have conquered both the clubbing underground and the world. During the movements tour they released the 12”s Tickle / Karma Car and Numbers, both international radio and club hits, as well as a mix CD for the DJ Kicks series which was chosen as DJ Magazine’s #1 compilation of the year and Mixmag’s #2.

Since their formative synth-pop days in the early 90s, Booka Shade went on to release records on labels like R&S, Music Man, Tommy Boy and Harthouse, influenced by the surrounding techno and dance scenes. Their big hits of the 90s include the trance classic “Una musica senza ritmo” as Degeneration and progressive tracks “Kind of Good” and “Silk” on Dutch label Touché. By the end of the 90s, they sought a new, more personal outlet for their creative energies, which they found through Get Physical Music in 2002. They have since been at the production helm of countless releases by M.A.N.D.Y, DJ T, Sunsetpeople and Chelonis R. Jones, and the label has quickly grown to become one of the most respected and popular underground dance music labels around, releasing hits from a variety of artists from the aforementioned to Samim, Lopazz, Raz Ohara, Elektrochemie and Jona.

In 2004 Booka Shade released their highly acclaimed debut album Memento, but it was their seminal collaboration with M.A.N.D.Y, “Body Language”, that launched them into the stratosphere. An immediate underground hit, the track also broke commercial realms and was awarded ‚Ibiza Track of the Season 2005’. Booka Shade’s solo offering “Mandarine Girl” became a bona fide club smash and subsequent live performances at the 2005 Sónar festival in Barcelona and with Mylo in London led to a tour with Royksopp and warm up set for Depeche Mode. Garnering massive props for both their studio work and live performances, Booka Shade have become in-demand remixers, lending their production magic to respected artists including Moby, The Juan McLean, Yello, Hot Chip, Depeche Mode, Roxy Music, Dubfire, Tiga, Dave Gahan and The Knife.

In 2006 the UK’s leading electronic music website, Resident Advisor, crowned Booka Shade ‚Best Live Act’ and awarded them the title of ‚Best Album’ for their second long-player, Movements, the band’s most coherent and engaging work yet. Released in May 2006, it featured the massive club hits “Mandarine Girl” and “Body Language”, alongside new club anthems “Night Falls”, “In White Rooms” and “Darko”. These tracks were among 2006's biggest dance tunes, and “In White Rooms” and “Night Falls” were the two top-selling EPs for worldwide vinyl distributor Intergroove. Pitchfork, the US music website, listed “In White Rooms” amongst the best songs of the year, while Germany’s ME Sounds listed 2004’s “Vertigo” amongst the “most important songs of all time”. Simultaneously Booka Shade enjoyed serious kudos from Groove Magazine’s end-of-year poll when they were selected as the second best producers of the year, and Movements was featured in their top 10 albums of the year. Adding to overall acclaim for the album, Germany’s top DJs voted the band as the country’s best live act and US magazine XLR8R championed the album as one of the top 100 of all time.

I won't be going to this, Ill be in the O2 at Kasabian, however i'm interested has anyone seen Booka Shade do a DJ set and if so what was it like? I can't see it being half as entertaining as their Live Set earlier this year in Tripod.

Having heard a few Booka Shade DJ sets, I wouldnt be too pushed to go see them do one in a club. A live show obviously would be a different matter
