That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

On a similar topic, how do you build up your shoulders? Is there a way to do it without using weights?

I actually saw Paul O'Connell in the gym in UL doing some kind of neck exercises. It looked like a scrum cap with some light weights hanging from it. He was just bending his neck back and forward.. I'm sure it wasnt an actual scrum cap but something similar!

If you look in Kev M's log he does the same, so does podge57, its called a neck harness, your hang some weights from it. Personally for the shoulder cap i do shoulder presses and shrugs for the traps.

Worked for me! Granted I wasn't trying to train my neck but it did contribute to it growing. I wasn't taking the piss or anything!!!

I find the neck harness to be a really good stress reliever .

Doing situps with a plate on your head will hit your neck pretty hard if you let most of the weight rest on you. Whether or not it's recommended to let a plate rest on your head is probably a whole other discussion.

I don't think tesco stock them anymore so the internets would probably be your best bet. I got mine from www.elitefts.com . They have two types, their own branded one, and a spud inc. one. From reading some reviews, I decided to get the Spud inc. one. It's expensive (about 40euro) but very good quality.

Actually these do work well, you can do the same thing lying on a bench with your head off the end, grab a couple of plates, pad them with an old sweater for comfort, stick em on your forehead and just use hands for balancing the weight. Raise head until chin meets upper chest, lower and repeat. You can do em in reverse aswell.

You might be better off getting a neck harness tho for safety reasons. I'm sure irish-lifting has em, even saw em on amazon recently but not sure as to the quality of the amazon version.

Also wrestlers bridge press is a great exercise, (look it up), difficult to do but will give you a fcukin tyson neck :)

As for other exercises, Shrugs, upright rows, deads etc will all assist to build and strengthen the neck to varying degrees.

I've started doing a lot of neck exercises lately, I built myself a make-shift neck harness and it's workin' away doin' the job fine boyo. That bridging exercise that Matt Furey always talks about looks scary to me and quite dangerous. But you also hear t'is the sh|t.
