It would fit once the appropriate tax is taken out. How did you come about this money?

They'd fit alright but I don't think it would be healthy.

You are not taking gaps when the money is stacked next to each other into account. ou need Volume of the pound and air around it.

    Ahh fck it...

    Volume of coin ~ 500 mm^3
    1 million coins ~ 500 mm x 1,000,000 = 500,000,000 mm^3

    1 mm^3 = 0.000000001 m^3
    1 million coins ~ .5 m^3

    They'd fit no problem.
    (I think??)
    Suspension wise..
    Anyone care to estimate density:p

    Edit : nm density ~ 19000 kg / m^3
    Can it handle that?

Depends, what else is in the boot? Golf clubs? Weeks shopping?

By the sounds of it he's only picking the car now.

Go for a Ford Transit OP.

    No.
Irish pound coin: 31.1 mm diameter.
Not sure of the edge thickness but if you go with 2.5mm, it's:

    .0311 *.0311 * .0025 * 1000000 m^3 = 2.418025m^3. (with air between coins ie not melted down etc).

1000 litres in a cubic metre so that translates into 2418.025 litres.

A VW golf estate's boot space is no more than 1550 litres according to this.

    So no.

So you'd need 2 VW Golfs then. Or use the back seats.

    I chose a 50mm diameter coin and a thickness of 5mm and I got less than 1 m^3
    where'd i go wrong?:(

Me thinks me sees a mistake in yours

    1mm^3 =/= .001m^3 :p

1000000 irish pound coins would weigh 10000 kgs (10 tonnes).
So the weight is the more important issue tbh.
    20 cars maybe, i dunno?

Surely weight is only an issue if you intend to drive off with the cargo?

this needs to be tried in real life

theresa lowe should host the live tv spectacular..

in other news.. where do all the old pound coins go.. do they live in some far away country or are they melted down and made into bridges

FWIW, for your coin (surrounded by air of course):
    50 mm * 50mm * 5 mm would give you 12500 * mm^3 not the 500 mm^3 you calculated.

    20 cars maybe, i dunno?

Old Pound coins weighed 10g each

so this is the only realistic calculation so far

and NO, the Boot of a VW Golf would not be capable of holding ten tonne, Ten Tonne would be too much for a transit Even

I had a look at the carrying capacity of my Fleet

the only things I have that could carry that weight are
    a Volvo F7 tipper truck
    A Mercedes 1517 flatbed

and even then none of my loaders or Forklifts could lift it onto the truck.

if you had the chocolate ones that were around when we were kids they might work but you'd have to let the back seats down, so technicaly not in the boot

Just checked, the old 5p weighed 3g, so even a million of those is still 3 tonnes, I'd be interested to see if there was any currency in circulation that you could put a million of in the boot of a golf?

why old pound coins? why not 2 euro coins? the answer is no by the way. I would say that the most in old money would be 20 grand.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,647 ✭✭✭✭El Weirdo

Well this is 1,000,000 american pennies. So I would say no.

No, maybe inside the whole interior of the car but not just the boot alone.

Why has noone point out how ****ed up this posters calculations are? You realise that 500mm^3 is 50cm^3 right? So your saying that a pound coin has the same volume as 50 blocks that are all a cm cubed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,537 ✭✭✭✭Cookie_Monster

    no
no bother to fit them however...

    1. very heavy, car may not move after:D

    2. where do you get them?

    3. how do you stop everyone stealing them (a million quid is 1.27m in real money these days!)

    Google say other wise...

    500 (millimeters cubed) = 0.5 centimeters cubed

If you are stacking the coins perfectly they would take up the area of a square.

So they're 31.1mm in diameter, so the square is 967.21mm². Assuming a 2mm thickness thats 1934.42mm³. Multiply be a million and convert to m³ give yous 1.93m³. Smaller than I expected.

    a meter cubed is 1000mm x 1000mm x 1000mm
    = 1,000,000,000 mm cubed not a million

    correct answer: 1.93442 × 10-6 meters cubed
