    Hey,
Was wondering if anyone here can help me out.
When i try to access the Ditwifi network it ass me for my username and password. I enter it and always get told they are invalid, was just wondering if anybody knows why this is happening or even know who I should get in contact with to help me out? Have searched the DIT website but can't find who i should email!

    Any help would be appreciated!

The wireless is down over all the sites, if you want to email someone and complain, send an email to support@dit.ie or ring them on 01-4023123. Siemens are the one whom is managing it, and I heard from the DIT Students Union Governing Council that they had shut the wireless down tonight at 9p.m. and have a specialist from Germany fixing it, so we will have to see what will happen. Best update I can give you at the moment, Beekay.

First thing I'd say is that it's incredible that an Institute of Technology needs an external company like Siemens to run a wireless network who's primary use is to get students online. What do the IT staff within DIT actually do? Everytime there's something wrong the finger is pointed anywhere but at them... Surely having them fix an issue with a wifi network is cheaper then contracting Siemens...

Second is that, while they'll tell everyone a specialist is coming from Germany to fix this problem, the chances are that this specialist is some dude who works as a road techie anyway and, in my experience, probably isn't that much more knowledgeable then anyone else.

It's infuriating that with budget cuts I can't see my final year project coordinator for longer then 30mins, but they can shell out for a Siemens engineer, despite having IT guys on staff.

This will only get worse in the future. The more cuts there are to public sector pay, the harder it will be for anywhere to hire experienced technical staff and the more they'll have to pay to external companies. Warped logic.

"First thing I'd say is that it's incredible that an Institute of Technology needs an external company like Siemens to run a wireless network who's primary use is to get students online."

The DIT teaching staff have nothing to do with IT services in the DIT. What's your point?

"What do the IT staff within DIT actually do?"

Quite a few are completely incompetent - the rest are assigned to various functional areas that have not yet been farmed out to private companies.

"Everytime there's something wrong the finger is pointed anywhere but at them... Surely having them fix an issue with a wifi network is cheaper then contracting Siemens..."

Trust me, contracting Siemens works out cheaper in the long run.

He knows his stuff. If he didn't Siemens (private company) would not have him on the pay roll.

Siemens are footing the bill not the DIT.

I never referenced the academic staff here.. don't put words in my mouth. Or text in my post, as it were.

Which is partially my point. There is staff there - if they're incompetent why aren't their managers turfing them out?

Do you think big multi-national corporations hire Siemens to handle their wifi? Why can't DIT not just hire the right staff for the right job in this scenario? They can sure as hell shut down a game of counter strike in a lab quick enough, why not get them to sort out some real problems?

For the most part you're right, but I've plenty of experience from these road techies not being trained up to proper standards - and often being third party to the company in question.

So DIT gets free services, wifi and what not from Siemens? Why do I not believe this?

If we are gettting onto incompetent IT staff then lets tlak about their inability to load software onto 2 labs which total about 55 computers which they have told us before requires installing it only on 1 computer iin each lab as the rest slave off it.

THe lab technician gave the install dvd to them before college returned in September, its the middle of november and it snot installed yet. The students all have 2009 version as we download a new student licence each year but the college is still running 2008. This means we cant work at home and then bring our work in because the files are not compatable. So basicly we cant work on our projects out of college hours...

It's hilarious actually. We've been going to the head of the school of computing about this since the start of this year after they came up with the bright idea of virtualizing the specialised games labs.

When nothing was done, we went to the students union, and they brought it up at their forum on the cutbacks and it was made aware to the head of the faculty of science. We're nearing the end of term and still nothing has been done.

The computers in the games labs that they spent €100,000 on are now the most expensive paper weights in the college. Hell, the technicians only got around to installing the right drivers for the gpus last Thursday, on top of spending 3 weeks at the start of term imaging the lab. It's absolutely fucking pathetic.

I've also been informed by a number of lecturers in DIT that money is not the problem. The school of computing has loads of money and they're just not allowed spend it.

    Bring back Brendan O'Shea.

It's also worth mentioning that the wireless network was down for quite a large period of time, and they only got it up and working because the Windows 7 launch was in Kevin St.

    +1,000,000,000

20 mins seems to be the limit for third year project mentors
in DT211 at the moment. The email system cost a mint too even
though decent open source solutions exist. Sad really.

The monolithic "everything and the kitchen sink" solutions are a load
of complete and utter bollocks. If the School wants credibility, they
would simply drop this garbage. Whats so special about this software?

Well in my course and no doubt other computer-nerd courses they always harp on about open source, UNIX/Linux and the generally availability of free stuff out there, yet they never manage to convince the people in charge to use.

Why buy a laborious, untrusted piece of bloatware to run email when Google apps is free, and works a charm..? Why use webcourses when it's only tested on 1 browser and even new versions of Windows get errors? (and for some reason webcourses uses Java... it's just a web interface to share documents ffs)...

It sounds to me someone in the upper ranks in DIT keeps getting wowed by good sales pitches from shiesters.

Its solid works, 3d moddeling package. Basicly we do 90% of our work in it so without it we are screwed.

I'm in Bolton street doing Mechanical Engineering, I know solidworks is on a few PC's downstairs in machine workshops, but its SolidEdge(which I dislike) upstairs in the computer labs.

Is there anyway to get a Solidworks Student Licence, even an older copy from DIT? I had to reformat my pc and lost the student copy I got for doing my 6th year project drawings.

Also, Wifi is hopeless, because of the way its set up(with username/password), I can't fet any apps on my phone to work with it.

Yeah, there is a student copy you can get. I dunno if its available to everyone but if you go to room 284 and tlak to the engineer there, his name is Sean Keanan and ask him about it. Hes the man in the know.

When WIll the wifi be fixed?

As a student you want to be able to bring your laptop in, sit down in the library/ snackery and do your work/ research on your own laptop using your own programs with no hassle and hoping there are no labs on in the labs..

Today I could do **** All as the wifi wasnt working for me and then there were labs on so i had no source of internet.

Disgrace in an Institute of Technology!

Let's just hope some Computer Nerds Graduate, come back and Fix the Problems!

    DIT can't do wireless networking.

Jesus, it's not too ****ing hard to setup and maintain a wireless ap hanging
off a DMZ. It's not like the techs have to manage other sites.

A few embedded boxes running OpenBSD would do the job fine. Setup...minimally
maintain the ap's...address issues DONE! fcuk off...Next topic.
