    Hi guys,

The lovely PaintDoctor has given me permission to post here, so I hope it's okay with all of you too. I've started a thread in the surveys forum looking for about 10 pilots, or anyone with any experience of flying a plane, to answer 10 very quick agree or disagree questions for me. It's for a college project on the personality characteristics of pilots. The thread is here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055730340 . All the details are in that thread, and I really appreciate anyone who takes the time to answer! If you could post in this thread to let me know that you've done it, I'd be really grateful.

Sorry for cross-posting but this is obviously the best place to go for participants! :)

Edit: I've gotten all the responses I need, so I've closed the survey now. Thanks again to everyone who took part!

You guys are absolutely fantastic, thank you so much! I got twice as many responses as I needed, so now my data is going to be excellent :). I really appreciate everyone taking the time to answer.

    Hey,

Didn't get a chance to do your survey.

Would be interested to know what it's all about and what your results are!!!

Yeah i'd be interested in the final data alright.

When you said quick you really meant it. Too late for me to contribute. Hope you didn't get too many 'Microsoft pilots'. It would distort the results.:D

Our lecturer said to try and get 5 responses. I decided to get 10. When I logged on today, there were 20! So I closed the survey before I felt greedy :). I'm happy to post up the results once I know them. I'm just looking to confirm what's already known really - that pilots are very hard working, dedicated, withstand pressure well, and work well within a team.

BTW, are there any active female posters here or should I assume everyone who responded was male?

She said I'm lovely, aw, shucks :o

Anyway, delighted the survey worked - behold the power of boards, and a big thanks to all the A&A contributors who filled it in.

Don't mean to be a pain, but you don't get a "pull up" call for windshear....

So, I take it you're a PC pilot?

If so why fill out the questionnaire?

    We're not fighting Paintdoctor:).

Ah now I get it, I knew it had to be simple, thanks for clearing it up. I don't have a GPWS on my thing. But the Garmin gets all excited when I fly near high ground. 'Terrain, terrain' it flashes urgently but silently.

No ronnie, Steyr has been known to soar with the eagles on occasion, not just virtually.

Coola boola, the reason I asked was by very strange coincidence I had a PC pilot tell me at the start of the week that he could fly an ILS as well as any airline pilot because he has hundreds of hours on MS Flight Sim:eek:. I politely smiled and walked away but remained interested in the thought process behind such a belief.

Oh yes, ronnie came across similar myself both online and in the real world. The problem I think is the lack of knowledge. If you've been through an instrument rating course, you know just how intense it is. I even had a PPL, a good pilot but a tad overconfident, dismiss instrument flying as easy, 'don't know what the fuss was about'. Just because he flew in cloud with his Instructor and has delved into it on occasion on his own. I'll be taking him on a session of unusual attitude training soon. That should restore his attitude, once he gets a decent case of the 'leans'.

I'm not against sim. I happily play with mine. PC sims can be useful but they can never replicate the reality. As Steyr pointed out certain things are never properly replicated. I'd like the see the sim that properly replicates the tension flying into a regional airport on a stormy night with a nasty crosswind. PULL UP, PULL UP indeed!

    Nah.......that would be a "windshear........":):)

I dont think FS9 or anything more advanced can replicate +7 or -3G, and thats something il never forget, or watching a €5 float off the dash as we descend!:D

watching a €5 float off the dash as we descend
A fiver, oh dear. I'd never risk that much money. Actually it's more fun to watch people float off the floor of a cabin for a few seconds when you induce a bit of weightlessness.:D

Are you sure that having the moderators as a control sample is not going to over-represent a-type personalities and distort your results?

    NTM

No, but I think having a tank commander IS going to distort the results. :p You guys have big tubes.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 30,661 Mod ✭✭✭✭Faith

Hey guys, totally forgot to come back to you about this. The results indicated the pilots are significantly more dedicated, hard-working, able to work well in a team and able to cope well under pressure than non-flying controls. Thanks again for participating!

Go on, tell us what the questions were. Please...

I think one of the things that MS pilots don't realize is the terminal ending to a mistake or malfunction. On MS you just hit pause or restart.
I do however find MS worthwhile, and have used it to fly an approach into an unfamiliar airport before. It made a good training aid.
