Ok i'm already got sky+ in the sitting room and i was wondering if i got a second SKY+ box and connected the other 2 connections to the sat. dish

Could I record the freeview/free to air channels onto the harddrive
    - without a sky card
    - or does it need a sky card to allow the record functionality
(maybe a english free to air card)

I know i'll need multiroom to view the same subscription channels

Would this sky+ box only be able to view channels and not record them...
    without getting multiroom.

There is a custom firmware that unlocks a certain model of Sky+ boxes i think its for the PVR2 model

yes it would be able to view the channels but not record them, that would need a sub.

i do remember seeing around here someone had a uk ftv card that allowed recording.

You can buy a Pvr such as the foxsat made by humax that will record all the fta channels for you and allow you to watch something else at the same time.
