i wouldn't take too much notice of the news and papers these days they just seem to get a small inkling that something bad is going to happen and then they run with it they seem intent on keeping everyone miserable during this resession when the bank shares were going up they never said a thing about it but as soon as they had a bad run it was front page news and even made the lead story on the 9o'clock news one night last week just to make sure that the dumping of shares would continue.
    bottom line bad news sells

but that is just my angle on the media at the moment. it dosnot mean for one minute mean that this is a load of cods wallop. someone said something somewhere and there is no smoke without fire, in fairness they don't invent the headlines they just have a certain amount off page space to fill:D

Thanks for the response! Yes indeed, the media are certainly talking things down at the moment. A bunch of bitter journos who never made any money during the boom years and who feel the need to depress the rest of us. But maybe I'm being too harsh...

Bad news certainly does sell. But what would happen to bank shares, in a worst case secnario and the banks are temporarily nationalised?

Good how the OECD and the papers conspired on this isn't it.

How could the papers be so outlandish as to report news? And they did plenty of reporting on the good times but nobody cared about it then so it went unnoticed. The reason that it's front page news is because the banks demise affects the whole country where as the good news affected nobody but shareholders. I'm certainly more interested as to what my taxes are going on than how much money some investor stands to make. You are correct that bad news sells but it doesnt mean they have some hidden agenda to get people to dump shares. Take off the tin-foil hats, no conspiracy here

As for temporary nationalisation I believe the shares would still be valid but would then be diluted by a re-issuance when the bank was re-listed. It'll never happen anyway. If they temporarily nationalise the bank then IMO it won't be coming back

Well, like I said, maybe a bit OTT. I think the constant drumbeat of bad news is just getting to me... Don't blame the messenger I suppose.

Hmmm... interesting - thanks! I was wondering too what happened to all the Anglo shareholders. I have friends who lost a fair bit with them, and wondered if they would ever see any sort of return on their investment if they were ever publicly listed again.
