Training for (separate) running and cycling events

    Howdy,

I'm hoping to do various running and cycling events next year. Specific aims include the Connemarathon (marathon distance) in April and Marmotte (long cyclosportive in the Alps) in July.

I'm wondering how best to combine the on-foot/on-bike training.

I've run 2 marathons in the past and have done a fair amount of cycling, so I'm used to following training plans, but I've generally been working on one thing at a time. I presume it's obvious that following both a marathon and cycling plan over the winter would be too much, so I'm guessing some sort of tri plan would be best (minus swimming probably).

I'm coming from quite a low fitness base right now; especially for running.

    Any thoughts? Thanks.

If you'd mentioned that in the other thread I'd have suggested you get the triathlon training bible rather than the cycling bible ;)

If you have particular events you want to train for and the target cycling events are in and around the same time as the target running events (e.g. a cycle A event is on a week before a run A event) then I'd suggest you train as if you're competing in duathlons. Friel's triathlon book covers this.

However if you're training for cycling early in the year (e.g. WW200) and running later in the year (e.g. DCM) then you will want to stagger you're periods so you front load the cycle training while keeping the running ticking over, and then switch over after the cycling event so you decrease cycling and build up running mileage.

    I'm no expert though...

    Thanks MadHatter.

The other thread was a general base training question. Thinking about my training schedules has reminded me about this marathon I've entered. I'm at a loss as to how to be 'holistic' about it. I'd already ordered the Cyclist's Training Bible too!

Sounds like following a marathon training plan for now with the odd low intensity cycle thrown in.
