    Hi Guys,

My old DLP blew at the weekend so I'm looking for a replacement.
    My reqs are as follows.
    42-46" (old TV was 46")
LCD or Plasma (I don't care)
    Black blacks
    High refresh rate (3-400Hz)
    Vivid colours
    Decent stock speakers
    3 HDMI, Component etc.
No need for SD readers, USB or BB connectivity.
Freeview tuner built in would be a nice extra (as I can pick up FV from the north) but not essential.

    Budget €700-1000

    Any recommendations ?

    Thanks,
    Pat.

I'd suggest as one option to ask (or checkout other posts) over in the RS/Philips Forum.

Panasonics new 42' G10, very tempted to get this myself with a trip up to Curry's in Newry. Works out at €1000 give or take 5 quid and has gotten really good reviews right across the web.

Agreed, thats a fantastic set except for the poor scaling of SD channels, Amazing on HD though

Ha, it's funny you should mention that one. That's exactly the one I'm looking at.

How do you mean about SD content? I only have Sky+ and not sure about upgrading to HD (yet) so how good/poor is the SD display ?

Does this apply to non-BluRay DVDs too ?

My local 'Expert' electrical store has that TV for €969 with a 5yr parts & labour warranty.

It came to light in hdtvtests review of it

Also there are some nigglings about it on avforums

€969 is a pretty good price for it with a warranty, are you sure it was wasnt the inferior 42S10? Also the Irish version does not have a freesat tuner but that probably wont bother you seeing as you have sky

Yeah I know the G10 in Ireland doesn't have Freesat but it has an Mpeg-4 decoder. I'm sure it was the G10 that he quoted me. The S10 was 899.

    Thanks for the links, btw.

Got any recommendations about a more suitable 1080p Plasma that can handle SD well/very well until I get SKY HD ?

Is 1080p all that important over 720p as the AVForums review suggested not !?

Your stuck with panasonic when it comes to 1080p 42" plasma's so the V10 would be the next up from the g10 i guess, not sure SD is any different to that on the g10 though, See what theyre saying on avforums.(See the hdtvtest review too). There is no irish model of the v10 though. That said, on the sd thing, many users on avforums are quite happy with sd on the g10 so it must come down to personal opinion, what what is it like in the shop you saw it in?

Well I'm not sure it was an SD source they had feeding into it tbh (and I neglected to ask, D'oh) but as I wanted something future-proofed (as much as is practicable) and based on the AVForums and HDTV reviews (taking into account the SD drawbacks in some peoples eyes) I went out this evening and bought it. It's being delivered tomorrow so I'll let it settle in for a few weeks on 50% brightness, contrast & colour to bed in the screen (apparently that's what you're supposed to do with plasmas, true ?) and report back on my experiences.

Anyone got any ideas about how to configure it properly ? Will a THX DVD help ? Is there another way ?

    Thanks all.

PS, to those expecting a christmas pressie from me. Sorry...ain't gonna happen ! :)
