Dell 90W AC adapter dead?

In the last few days, my Studio 1735 has been refused to charge from the AC Adapter I got with the laptop when I purchased it. Says that it cannot determine the adapter type, blah blah blah.

I thought it might be the new 9-cell battery, but replacing it back with the 6-cell did no good.

So my question is, what possibly remedies have I to get my batteries to charge again??
My university program relies heavily on the use of laptops, so I'm quite frustrated that this is happening, after only a year of using the laptop.

Would the AC adapter for Inspiron 9400 be suitable for my laptop? A friend may have a spare one of those..

Thanks for any help or advice.
