Whats the best stuff to spray on the various bits of your bike when you come in from the rain to keep everything in good condition? I only say GT85 because there was a huge can of it for €2.50 if you buy a bike in Halfords, never heard of it before then, is it any good?

I spray WD40 on the seals of bearings and moving parts to get rid of water, never use the stuff as a lubricant though.

GT85. It's a good water displacer. Very similar to wd40 but it has some teflon in it too I think. Spraying a bit on exposed nuts and stuff isn't a bad idea to prevent oxidation, but it is not to be confused with lube or anything. I use it on my chain after degreasing and rinsing to dispel water before adding a real lube. Seems to work well and it smells nice.

What lubricant do you reccomend then please, I havent put anything on the chain except GT85 and WD40 since I bought the bike.

Excellent, and free postage aswell, thanks DirkVoodoo, it better not say wet lube on the outside of the package though.

    2nd that.

But make sure you thoroughly clean your chain before applying it. Also wipe the chain lightly with a dry rag after applying a generous amount.

Just bear in mind with the likes of chain lube CRC are not generally any cheaper than your local bike shop...

Dude dont use WD-40 on your bike, especially not on your chain, it gunks it up. Best use GT85 or better still a dry/wet chain lube on your chain. GT85 is grand most other jobs on your bike too. I work in the Bike Hut in Halfords and some of the lads recommend using GT85 to clean your frame to be honest thats not the best idea, it can be quite harsh on the paint job, especially if its got a matt finish. Hard to beat soap, a spung and really hot water for that, and a really good dry down.

You risk getting rid of the grease as well.

Thanks G50 but I made this thread 2 years ago, you'll have your work cut out for you if you're going back that far offering advice, I was just asking about lube again a couple of days ago for my new bike though funnily enough.

    Hi folks

I dont frequent the cycling section usually but spotted this thread. i koow its old but what the hell, I know my lubricants but unfor dont know much about bikes.

WD40 is a penatrating fluid which means that it is essentially use to free up seized parts. I would not use this as a lubricant. The petrol in it dries out parts especially bearings.

3 in 1 is a great oil however it drips from the wheel bearings which means it can get on your clothes, the carpet or the floor.

Another one is silicone spray/greese. The spray lubricates, seals and cleans and its invisable bar the dirt that sticks to it. The greese is the same except its greesy.

I am not fam with GT85
