Some questions about Sky...

My parents live in the stix and cannot get NTL. Really all they want is the basic channels with the easiest possible way of using the TV and recording onto VHS which they do a lot. Since a few of the British channels are not gone from Terrestrial, a local guy came and fitted a dish and gave them a sky box for the free to air. However, you have to use the TV for RTE 1 & 2 etc - then switch to a certain channel and use the sky remote to get to the uk channels. Recording is a bit of a pain too. They are totally techno retards and this is way to complicated for them. So I'm thinking a sky subscription package might be easier, but they are moaning about the cost.

Is there any other simple way around this that anyone can think of? Or is Sky the best Option?

One other question: I have NTL. I have the digital package but there are a load of channels I don't watch or have, so I use the favorites where I store the channels I watch and only navigate them. Am I right in saying that on Sky you do not have this? You can set some 'favourites' but you can only push one button which scrolls through them. This seems ridiculous to me. Surely you can set the menu to not show channels you do not have - can't you? If you have a few random channels up in the 500's and 600's its a total pain to navigate to them!

you can set favs on sky box, but as you say only way of looking through them is to press the blue button .

maybe a freesat box would help? wont help with the rte thing but will get rid of the junk channels.

have you thought of a combo box? gives rte digital (still testing though)

I got one for my parents and they find it ok. a little fiddly but at least all the channels are in the one remote.

if they had bbc etc was it from Wales? http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055658286
    might have some info.

Regarding ease of recording (including RTE) I'd say Sky+ is the way to go. It's probably worth the €21 per month for the convenience.

You can set up favourites on Sky, and then you get an EPG screen of just those channels.

If you can cope with switching to a different system for RTE then a freesat recording box is a good option.

How exactly do you do this?

Back in (I think?) 2006 Sky updated the system to allow this. You add a Channel to Favourites in the usual way. (On a Sky+ box, press Services, and then 9).

To view your "Favourites Only" EPG, press the blue button on the Guide screen. You can have an EPG of up to 50 channels of your choice.
