Decided to move my Megadrive games into a few boxes that came with the Tesco shopping. Sick of not being able to get to them at the back of a wardrobe!

Would love to put them all in a big bookcase, but alas, don't have the room.

Anyway, thought it would be a good time to take some pics as I've been fairly unsuccessful (And lazy) trying to photograph them in the past. Plus I've never actually seen them all lying down side by side in one area before.

/edit, just noticed I acidentally included a master system game. Sounds like the perfect time to play some 'Where's Wally?' :D

Argh, also noticed I still haven't found Comix Zone and Ranger X. Where the hell did they go?! I love those two games.

/Further edit - argh, forgot to include my Mega CD games. There's always some oversight!! Bit late now.

The Master System game is spiderman! :D Whats in the box with no cover beside it?

Excellent collection. Makes me want to sort myself out MD-wise.

Aha, gouls and ghosts. I have the jap version (Daimakaimura) but keep forgetting what it is in english.

You're not one of those horrible gloaters are you, come here to gloat?

Nice collection, and if storage is a problem you could always give them away to a random Boardsie, lets say, erm, oh, dooferoaks :o

    Well spotted! /Gives atavan-halen a lollypop.

The blank case beside it is Lethal Enforcers. It came as cart only in a big cardboard box with the gun.

The box is from a Robocop Versus the Terminator I swapped for that unboxed Jungle Strike down the bottom when I was a kid.

The guy didn't have a box for Jungle Strike so I refused to give him the Robocop Versus Terminator box :D Ah the pettyness of youth.

Somehow I don't think you can really gloat about having videogames. If anything it's a secret shame :pac: I have issues.

Ballz was a childhood mistake. I keep it in my collection to forever remind myself to read reviews before buying things!

Rise of the Robots..well..there really is no excuse for that one. Pardon me while I go flagellate myself.

Nice collection, I seem to remember owning most of those at some point, then foolishly selling them to buy Super Mario World for my new Snes instead, well maybe not so foolish!

Still, we'll be playing these babies long after the drives and disks in our later consoles are long since kaput!

If you had most of them at one point you must have been a whore for trading in games! I sure was. £5 for a new game. Yes please.

My first goal was to get all the games back that I'd traded in over the years. The next one was to buy every Megadrive game I'd played (Not including those emulator thingies).

Still working on the second one!

Was going to try for a complete collection. But to be honest there's so many rubbish pointless games on the system I don't think I'll bother. And space is at a bit of a premium.

Still lots and lots of good ones to get though.

Wow what memories you brought back, I rem this Christmas 20 years ago buying a MD with me brother, bringing it home clutching it as if it was pure gold and spending 24 hrs a day playing it for the whole christmas. We ended up with about 10 games, we could only aspire to have as many as your collection, what a great memory ... felt awe struck admiring your collection !!

Very impressive. I am on a similiar mission to buy all the games I had as a kid. My mum and dad gave away my megadrive and megacd to a hospital charity when I moved out of home.

I have nearly forgiven them now....................Nearly...............

My mam threw out the first one I got that my uncle game me. Thank god the games weren't thrown out but the honeybee region converter was :(

This is exactly what I did with the N64 and PS1 and PS2, I bought every game I ever loved or wanted on each system, not just the games everyone said I should have, not the ones I played and found wanting, not a completists list by any account, just a collection of games where each and every one of them was a game I really wanted but couldn't have or was a game that has some really double-plus good memories attached.

Unfortunately that raises the problems of storage, and with over 160 PS2 games, things are getting a tad tight, and there are still a few to buy yet!

Storing 160 ps2 games must be a right pain in the arse! Where do you put them all? I think I have about 70 and I find that hard enough. Dvd type boxes in mass quantities do not make for easy storage.

The one thing that annoys me about them is the rather uninspiring spine they have :( It may sound extremely unimportant, but I quite like stuff to be on display rather than tucked away.

On the other hand, there is so much colour in a load of lined up Megadrive carts. Looks lovely! Even nicer are the Japanese ones with their wrap around artwork.

I hate PAL PS2 boxes. The NTSC boxes are very individual, have nice colour and look very distinct. The PAL ones are just bland, and the grey/black colour scheme for Platinum titles is ****e to be honest.

It's the same with PAL and US DS games. The US ones are thinner and have lovely colours on the spine whereas the PAL ones are generic :(

I store them all in row, but now that row has run out of space, so they are getting increasingly chaotic, used to be alphabetised, but my youngster is busy altering that arrangement!
Is No One Lives Forever worth getting on the PS2?

I really need a copy of Flashback for the Megadrive, anyone got one to spare?

I was cleaning out some old gear in my parents house and came across a nice little cache.

Remember I said I was missing Ranger X, The Revenge of Shinobi and Comix Zone?

I found them packed away along with another 15-20 boxed Megadrive games. Score! Seems I was missing more than I thought.

Also decided to alphabetize all the boxed games and came across 5 or 6 boxed doubles.

Also found about 20 cart doubles. For some reason have 5 copies of Sonic 1. (????)

I'm actually able to assemble the Sonic 1-3 cart trilogy from doubles I have. Might be nice for someone.

    (Trading forum nudge nudge)

Get it on the PC, it's a horrible PS2 conversion.

Well, I don't play games on the PC, not since about 97 or so, think the last game I bought for the PC was Mechwarrior 4 or something, I know I had the excellent I-War and Interstate 76 around that time as well, then the consoles called and I obeyed, the rest is history.
I tell a lie, the only thing I have played since are the occasional emulator, but not really in recent years especially since the Wii, DS and Xbox are so obliging in this department.

Figured something out tonight. My Mega Key isn't broken. It just doesn't work through the 32X.

Took the 32X off, flipped the dip switches to US settings and my NTSC Gunstar Heroes booted up perfectly on a PAL Megadrive.

Now the down side - Gunstar Heroes at 50hz is the suckiest piece of suck that ever sucked. Serious. It's the only Megadrive game I'd played exclusively 60hz. Never saw it run 50hz. Until now. Nearly threw up.

Interesting thing about the Mega Key is it changes the console to the necessary region. So I was able to boot up Bare Knuckle from the Streets of Rage carts by setting the dip switches to Japan. Still doesn't do anything to speed up the games though. So they're still stick at 50hz.

I have a Jamma Megadrive that does 50/60hz...but it's a little impractical to be connecting that up to my Mega supergun.. :D

So the next project is get an original non TMSS Megadrive 1 and install a region/hz switch.

Just in case anyone doesn't know, the very first Megadrive gives the best video/sound output..they're the ones with 'High definition graphics' around the top of cartridge slot. It also has no TMSS (Trademark security system)

Are these the same models just with slightly different fascias? Is either one the first MD of which you speak?

I saw both types in a shop today, and wondered which was better and why.

There's more to it than just the case. Different versions have different motherboards and parts. Some of them better quality than others.

The HD graphics first model is the best. The one you show there without HD graphics comes in two versions. The first one is good, the second one not so good.

There's a great guide over on sega-16 telling you wish megadrives to look out for -

    http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7796

Some good comments from that thread -

From my experience the non-HD model 1s still are better than any model 2 I ever tested. Still, the difference is incredible even between a HDG model 1 and non-HDG model 1 and I certainly would try to track down an HDG model

There are 2 variants of M1 without the HD logo, the VA6 with similar hardware to earlier models, and the VA7 which is basicly a model 2 in a m1 shell. (and the stereo might actually be slightly worse as it has to go through the headphone amp) One difference witht he VA7 and early M2s is that you're sure to have a good video encoder (usually the Sony CXA1145 it seems), like many earlier model 1s and some early M2's, but many M2s have the "peice of ****" samsung video encoder, distorted and very blury.

So basically, whenever possible, go for a HD graphics model 1 Megadrive. Second to that is the one you posted a picture of.

Tks, o1s1n, I had stumbled across that thread earlier somehow, but ended up more confused than ever, plus it was all about the Genesiseses, and I thought that it may not apply to the MD lineage?

    Which picture?

ETA: Just realised, one picture has been removed from its source page since I posted, here's what the other one looked like

    Mega_Drive_jaPG.jpg

The URL indicates it's a Japanese MD?

    Yep, that's a Japanese Megadrive.

That guide relates to the Genesis, but I'm fairly sure it's relevant to EU models too. I have no idea if it relates to any Japanese models. But would imagine it does. (Cant find a screen to see if there's a Japanese model with High def graphics written on it though)

I know the guide is confusing as they go into quite a lot of detail. But the main things to take out of it are -

There are two models with High definition graphics written over the cart slot. These are the best versions of the Megadrive to get.

The main difference between the two is one has TMSS, the other doesn't.

TMSS is a protection Sega put on the console to stop people like Accolade making unlicensed games. So if you have a TMSS model you won't be able to play these games. It's almost negligible to be honest. But is fairly cool to find a non TMSS model :).

The way to tell is when it boots up, a non TMSS will go straight to the game. A TMSS will have that bit at the start about being licensed by Sega.

Anyway, TMSS aside, both of these versions are great.

The next best is the model without High definition graphics written above the slot. But again, this has two different versions.

The first is good. The second isn't so good. (As far as I know it has rubbish sound)

Next we have some versions of the model 2. You can tell these by the metal plating when you flip it over. If the metal plating goes the who way across under the grills, you have a crap model.

If the metal stops half way across the grill (Meaning it has a smaller motherboard) this is a good Model 2.

But anyway, all that ****e aside - Just get a high definition graphics version!

/edit - Just a note, 'High definition graphics' doesn't mean the Megadrive actually has HD graphics! It was just a silly tag they put on the console. Because it's the first model it had the best parts...later models became cheaper which = cheaper parts

I love the way the early Jap ones said "High grade multipurpose unit" How many uses does it have??
