Guys just a heads up on the N.I open event that will be staged in Belfast on sunday January 10th 2010.The venue will be the Valley leisure centre.Registration will start at 10:30am.Fighters will weigh in with the gi on prior to stepping onto the mat, there will be no changing category on the day!
also we will be running an open weight no-gi event at the same time.so if you get put out of the gi tournament you can throw your name into the no gi event.
more details to follow on that.
pm me with any further questions or email me on peterlavery701 [at ] msn [dot ] com

    cheers

whats the point of weighing in with a gi on?

A good gi would weigh a few kilos whereas a piss poor one would be much lighter

Do you train in BJJ Jason?

regardless of the weight of the gi mate,IBJJF rules clearly state that the weigh in must be performed with the gi on.If the fighter fails to make the weight limit then he/she is disqualified. No second chances to make the weight and you must compete wearing the gi you weigh in with.
There is a no-gi event being staged at the same time if the gi event is not to your liking.

Great stuff, its a busy few months for BJJ competitions.

Weemate, Are you going to accept euro (€25?)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 407 ✭✭weemate

Yes sir,Im hoping that we will have a good crowd from the southern clubs. Some coaches have already contacted me about it,so we will take euro payments. The no-gi section incidently is included in the entry fee so as soon as your gi section has ended you can just register for the other....or just enter the no-gi.

I have a blue under Royce but don't train strictly in BJJ at the moment.

I have the points for my black belt in judo but haven't got round to doing the theory. Haven't trained in judo in a few years also.

It just seems strange to weigh with a Gi on. When I competed in judo I had a particularly heavy Gi that I wore that was harder to grip that the single weave cheaper ones you get.

I would guess it weighed at least 4 or 5 kilos.

Just wasn't aware that was a rule for BJJ comps.

he awarded it at a seminar in Derry years ago

He made all the people there roll and then brought a few of us out to roll against each other and then rolled with the whole group of people

at the end he handed out a few blue belts.

I get that Jason, im just asking is it the combat bjj belt as Royce was giving them out a few years ago and still does, do you know if it is?

Is it possible to just enter the no gi??

wtf is a combat bjj belt?

As far as i know Royce made it up as its not a sport BJJ belt and a more self defense orientated 1..

You would not be graded as a bjj player with 1.

    Cheers

thank feck someone asked what the combat belt was cus I didn't know

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,759 ✭✭✭✭dlofnep

Jason has been involved in MMA for a number of years. His question was genuine. BJJ rules require competitors to weigh in, in their gis Jason. Most will wear a gold weave gi due to strength and lightness.

Peter, just a quickie on the weigh in. If you're entering gi and no-gi - would you weigh in twice? Once for "gi weight" and once for "no-gi weight"?

Would be unfair for guys to weigh in with a gi, then give up a possible few kilos (if using a good comp gi) when switching into the no-gi brackets?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 249 ✭✭wingnut4

the no-gi is an absolute im near enough certain so can be any size, any sex

Cool poster. Expect a good crew from Informed Performance/Drysdale Jiu Jitsu to this one!

the no-gi is an open weight event split into guys training under 6 months and guys who have been training longer.I hope for total honesty when it comes to entering the sections.
On the day the fighters will register and pay the entry fee when they arrive at the venue, they will weigh in when their section is called [ gi event] when their section is finished they can leave their number with the officials for the no gi.I have two halls booked out at the centre so Im hoping we can get the no gi event started quickly fir anyone who will only be entering that section.
if anyone is entering the gi event can they get their details to me as soon as possible so that I can post the brackets on the various forums well in advance of the tournament?

:confused:From the form on the 1st post:

Entry to this tournament is by pre-registration ONLY. Applications received after midnight December 30th will not be processed

For other gyms, this might be an idea:

Like every club we get loads of lads saying yes definitely and then only one or two showing up at crunch time for one reason or another. So we're putting one man in our gym in charge of registration, he's collecting forms and cash in advance and we're probably hiring a mini bus as well so he's taking cash for that too. 40 people who registered for our last tourny failed to show. I'm sure they all had their reasons but it makes life very difficult for the organisers. Out of understanding for that, we're basically ensuring that anyone who registers, competes.

eh I wasnt being retarded, I had read the 1st post but the form is only for gi. Do nogi competitors weigh themselves with or without gi to make that weight? it would seem easier to have a nogi form too.:D

if all your tee shirt wearing clan could let you know who is taking part then you could email me numbers. The weight registration is vital for the gi event but it would be great if I knew how many to expect for the no gi.There is a good few that are just entering that side of the tournament so I prolly will have to change the way the day will be run.

Hi there. Just wondering what the expected turnout would be for, say, Purple Belt Lightweight on this one?

Considering making the trip over. ^_^

    Take care,

    Stalks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 407 ✭✭weemate

the purple belt section is open weight as to be honest there is not enough purples in Ireland to create seperate sections.I think the last two southern tournaments had the same idea.On the day,the purple belt section will be the first to go.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2 Stalkachu

    Okeydokey. Cheers for that.

...at a guess, how many purples would you say there would be? And is it single elimination? Because, uh, drawing a 120kg purple for my first and only fight would kinda suck. @_@

Still interested though. Haven't put me off yet. ^_^

    Take care,

    Oli

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 407 ✭✭weemate

I imagine, off the top of my head ,there could be between 8 or ten in the section all being well.To my knowledge the heaviest would weigh in around middleweight although I could be wrong. The entry fee allows you to take part in the no-gi event as well so as soon as you finish you can get a few matches there.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 35 lawrenceSummer

why not do what was done in the abu dhabi come recently and put pruple/brown in the one category.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 407 ✭✭weemate

there are only maybe 5 brown belts in the country and not all of them compete so we would be no better off.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 35 lawrenceSummer

Maybe, but some might travel, and it wouldnt take away from any comp to see Irish brown belts compete....
