I know every says you should study what your interested in ...but what would you say to someone who is thinking of studying Quanity surveying when they finish school ...do you think the lack of jobs ( at the moment ) ...in the area the young person is interested in should be a factor in choosing a course on the CAO ....

Im a quantity surveyor. Graduated in 08,still working but its very quiet. To be honest nobody seems to be taking it up in college as evidenced by the massive drop in points from when i started. If your interested you should go for it because in 4 years the economy will be on the up hopefully. You will then be in a good position to get a job. I wont lie though, it can be a very boring job and you spent vast amounts of time doin excel sheets and if you dont like maths forget it. My advice would be to get a job with a contractor over the summer months labouring etc to build up construction knowledge as well. Feel free to pm me with any questions you may have

I`m a QS also. Graduated in 2005. Most of my classmates are either working as QS`s overseas or out of work here. There were so many jobs to choose from when we graduated, it was fantastic. The country was/is over run with construction professionals.
You have to be clear why you want to be a qs. Its all cronin said it is and more, if its the technical side of construction you like, then engineering or building surveying may be best suited to you.
i would try and decide why i want to be a qs, then talk to constrction professionals and gather their thoughts. when i started college i wasn`t fully aware of the role of a qs.
