Paying Club Managers

First off, i don't want any example of managers who have been paid, that'll get the thread closed quicker than we can type the names but i want to get lads' general feelings on this.
I think it's obvious that the horse may have bolted on some county set-ups but would you be happy to see your club pay a manager / coach?
Personally i disagree with it fundamentally as i think you're robbing the future to provide for the present. There's far too much emphasis put on managers at club level but i appreciate that a bad one can set a club back years also.

From my experience there are capable people willing to do a job in / near most clubs and in any case, the manager is only a facilitator, if players don't put the work in, it makes no difference.

Even if you could guarantee a county final win (impossible, i know) would you be happy to part with €100 a night?

The marquee names certainly aren't travelling the length and breadth of the country for the good of their health and thats for sure. But look at the clubs who have brought them in, there hasn't been too much tangible success to point at - you can only do so much with whats at your disposal. I'm sure if you put Brian Cody in charge of Antrim there wouldn't be a huge difference in terms of success.

I think a lot of clubs would do well to look at their underage structures and the crucial transition from minor to senior. A lot of talented young lads are lost in those 4/5 years and if a club could successfully bring a group of them through those years then I think that would be a better chance of succeeding at county or even AI level than bringing in a marquee name. I know out of my year at school only one of us is still hurling with the home club. Then again he does happen to be Joe Canning :P
