Hi. I had always thought that a car had to be 30+ years old to qualify for vintage/veteran road tax.
I saw a 1985 280ce today and the disc had the correct reg but instead of engine size it stated "vint/veteran €48"

Probably a 1978-9 car reregistered in 1985 pre new type reg.

I was thinking something similar. But it's a new format reg, i.e. 85-D-xxxx so it must have been registered after '87

Some fella pulling a stroke so i'd say.

If the price is right and I could get away with the same stroke then I'd go for it. I'm sick of getting penalised for what the government regard to be a large engine

Called in yesterday to have a look. Car is ok for the €4k asking price. Tax disc says "61 mh c vinvet" IIRC and old discs in the glovebox showed same as far back as 2003. Dealer couldn't explain it.
Asked him if he'd take my yoke as a trade-in, "would I f***" seys he.

I certainly wouldn't buy it under any allusions that you were entitled to cheap tax.

You'd only be chancing your arm like the last owner.

And probably f**king things up for the rest of us, I've seen a few chancers with vintage plates on newer cars, if it keeps up we'll all be hauled in and our cars checked out.

    I agree!

And I also find it baffling how many vintage and classic cars appear at shows untaxed i.e. even those entitled to the €48 per year road tax?!!!

They are taking the p!%% imo!

I'm taxed but take the discs off for shows to avoid clutter, wonder do others do the same.

What I find amazing is how many english people travel to shows in Ireland with their cars....;)

actually is there not some way to reshell/rechassis ....

I'm sure I saw a landrover defender with modern shell on old chassis running ZV plates also ....

This is possible and legitimate in Ireland (and other countries) for cars that have a seperate chassis.
So you will find this mainly happens with Beetles and Land/Range Rovers, but eighties Mercs do not have a seperate chassis, so there is no way a 61 MH !!!!!!! car could be reshelled as an 85 Merc.

    Well dodgy.

The digits on the veteran tax discs are different to standard ones, so he's gonna run into trouble eventually anyway. Some eagle eyed half-yard will spot that one night and it'll be good enough for him.

I remove the tax disc for shows too.

Just inc ase someone steals one.

So does it have to be 30plus to be exempt from a NCT also ??

    Yep.

It's known in the Mini scene as well. I know of several '90s Minis with airbags going around on '60s/70s plates.

It has the potential to screw things up for everyone else.

Fair enough...avoiding clutter or being afraid the disc would be stolen could explain a few cars. However, I see plenty of vintage cars with ins disc on display but no tax disc.

In the case of clutter, personally I would be inclined to leave the discs/holder on the passenger seat to let ppl see all is in order. It's easy enough to lock the car to avoid them being stolen (except in the case of a soft top with the top down of course!).

I also see plenty of 'tax less' classics on road runs.

IMHO, we fought hard for the low rate of tax for classics and for ppl to still not tax them is a bit much.

Likewise where classics require NCT's, owners should comply. Otherwise it's casting a cloud over compliant owners....and the hobby as a whole.

    Just my 2c.
