    Hi CCfiles,

For all intents and purposes you lease the domain name since you pay to use it for a year or more. (I'm no lawyer so that's just my take on it.)

The .com domain names are available so long as you can find one that nobody has already registered and leased. These are cheap enough at maybe €7 a year.

The .ie names are more tightly controlled and you have to prove that you have a legitimate reason for owning them. These are normally people's personal names, business names, registered business names, or names that are closely related to business offerings. The .ie domains are slightly more expensive to lease at maybe €17 a year.

Here's the quick official guide for the .ie domain registration.

    I hope that helps.

    Andy

Disagree. You own it and can sell it. You do pay an annual fee but the fee is the same no matter what the 'value' of it is deemed to be.

Some domains are leased or rented by their owners, but that's different.

You cant sell a .ie domain, its part of the business its registered to so you must sell the whole business including the domain to legally sell it.

.ie domains are given out by the iedr who are the body of them here in Ireland. You must prove you have the right to the domain by showing for example a registered business name.

    BULL. See here http://www.domainregistry.ie/ChangeDomainHolder.php
No reference to selling business. The buyer must show they are entitled to the name. If I want to sell my domain I sell it to someone who has a web design business and registers a business name with 'wizard' in it.
