Acidic vs Alkaline - Help!

    Hi All,

Have just been told to avoid acidic foods for the next week, I need to eat warm hearty foods like stew and soup, definitely no tomatoes, oranges or dairy.

I was only given these guidelines really, but when I started checking it out online to see what's acidic and what's alkaline I got confused

Nothing was said to me about meat/chicken etc but I see on some lists it's to be avoided as well, and tomatoes are listed as alkaline

Also if anyone had any tips for recipes or meal ideas for me it would be a big help :)

    Hi there,

Have you been told why to avoid acidic foods? I think you'll find the PH of most foods to be acidic, but even though some have an acid pH before they are consumed and but they usually leave an alkaline residue in the body after they have been metabolized, citrus fruits fall into this category for example.

Hmm, I don't know what they means by 'acidic' food tbh. It's impossible to say without guessing. Was this to cure the thrush or just general wellbeing of the kidneys?

A good probiotic should help after any course of antibiotics, either an acidophilus tablet or live yoghurt.

Edited to say: Just saw it was to avoid kidney infections, think he meant purine-rich foods with can cause issues with kidney stones, which can be one of the causes of infection (but not always)

Generally speaking the culprit in high purine levels is not purine rich foods, but rather excess of fructose in the diet. Despite being the predominant fruit in sugar, fruit contains relatively low levels of fructose, especially berries. The more likely culprit is sugar, which is 50% fructose, 50% glucose. Staying away from sugar enables your gut flora to maintain a better balance too, reducing the risk of thrush re-occurring.

It's to cure everything really :) I think it's mainly just to get me back to being some bit healthy, and in fairness when she said no oranges I realised that the two times I've felt the worst in the last week were after I had oranges or orange juice, so I do believe her on the acidic bit, trying to even up the old pH and stuff.

And yup I've my probiotic yoghurt now too, ironic things I ate it while on the anitibiotics but still got it  Thanks for your reply anyways :)

I may be misunderstanding the post but it sounds like one of the myths spouted on the internet about the acid/alkaline food balance

It might also be no harm to take an acidophilis supplement for the next few weeks.

Can't answer you in relation to your original question though.

Yeah, I thought as much too tbh.. it probably originates from the purine thing then got mangled through the internet.

I think pretty much every food is acidic in PH, chocolate isn't, which is why it calms you down when your agitated as it acts like a mild antacid.

Right, grand, if it's a myth then there's no point in this thread, I don't know what the story is with locking threads but this might as well be locked so.
