VRT transfer of residence.

Has anyone done or heard of anyone registering a car from other than the UK aka a country with English as its first language?

Thing is,I lived in Spain for 3 years and as we decided we wanted to move back due to forth coming redundancy etc we bought a Spanish reg Seat RHD. 6months and a few days later we arrived in Ireland.

Went to the VRO with what I thought was all the relevent paperwork. Car purchase evidence,residency in spain,employment evidence etc etc. One of the first things the girl at the office said was,and I QUOTE!! 'I cant read this,this is all in Spanish' OMG I could have slapped her.....what in the hell does she expect it to be written in. Anyway tomorrow will be my 3rd time going back to the office because now I basically have to sit down with them and translate the documents for them. I could tell them a heap of lies...they have no idea what it means,so me telling them is goin to make it all ok?

I'm sorry...this post is more to blow off steam than to ask for ideas/experience etc.but if you have imported a Jap car,which used to be quiet popular or from any other non-english speaking country then tell me how you got on.

I brought in a German car, explained the paperwork to them and it was all fine. I'd be happy enough if I were you, they could reasonably have asked you to have the documents translated. Spanish is not one of our official languages in Ireland.

In some countries it's like that.

In general, if you want to avoid troubles, translate the documents and let the spanish consulate sign off on the translation.

That should give them no excuse.

Being danish, and having lived in 7 countries, I've had those issues multiple times.

Same as Anan1 - brought in a german car, but RHD. Gave them rental contracts, employment contracts, utility bills, bank statements to prove residency, all in German, everything was organised properly, sorted in reverse date order in two lever arch folders etc. - had no problems....

except...

the guy insisted on photocopying everything for some reason... including about 300 pages of bank statements .... then I think he put the whole lot in a tumble dryer to mix it up nicely and handed me back an armful of paper.... that's pretty much the way it's sorted in the attic at the moment in a bin bag... I think he was bitter.
I'm secretly hopeing they review it sometime, and ask me for proof of residency again... I'lll give them the bing bag and wish them the best of luck!

Nice to hear people stories,I'm afraid im not as organised as you brian but I do have my stuff in sections,rental contract,employment,car related stuff. To be honest I'm was just pee'd off with the first girls response. If they said on the site that the doc's must be in English then I would have done that.
Ah well,gotta go in there tomorrow so I'll report back.

Another thing,did it take long to get it approved,I'm 4 weeks waiting now cos the 'guy' who reviews them is out sick

I imported a german car earlier this year, paid VRT though. The issue was, there was no statistical code for it.

Took about a week. If there is a statistical code and your paperwork is approved, you pay your administration fee and walk out of there with your new registration number.

If they give you issues, you can always go to a VRO office somewhere else.

Only took about 90 minutes for me.... would have been in and out in 30 minutes had it not been for the photocopying!

I don't mean to sound smart, but I would never have expected staff in the VRO to understand Spanish in the first place.

If there is no statistical code, and my case it's a '99 LHD VW Caravelle, not too many of them imported, probably none prior me in my configuration, the VRO has to contact Rosslare to issue one or tell the VRO, what code to use. That's what takes a couple of days.

Other than that, you should be able to walk in there and walk out with the registration number the same day.

That goes without saying,I would'nt expect the Spanish to understand English documentation. What got me going was her attitude,it was just like she was saying the whole world should change for her.
Please remember the main point of this thread was to blow off some steam,was either that or I'd be buying a new laptop tomorrow too.;)

It's done,went in today at 2pm and was out by 2.45pm. It only took that long because the photocopier was broken. Delt with a different person this time and just went over the previously submitted doc's again with her. No hassle what so ever.

I know this is an old thread but I am facing this problem right now. The thing is that I went to the tax office right after I brought my car over with all the paperwork I could come up with and I proved that I owned the car in 2009 and then in 2011 but I had little paperwork for 2010 and I said to your man that its obvious since I owned it in 2009 and 2011 I must have owned it in 2010 as well but he said I have to bring more proof and also translate them.
I've gotten most of them translated and I was also away from the country so I am wondering if I am still eligible for this as it has passed more than 12 months since I moved to Ireland technically but I was away for a while.
I really appreciate your opinions.

Well as far a I know you only have to prove you owned the car for 6 months before bringing it in so that would rule out having to prove ownership for before 2011 eg bring in the car in november/december 2011 would mean only proving as far back as june/july 2011.A summary of bank statments showing everday withdrawals, salary payments etc. utility bills in your name which can be cross referenced with the bank account summarys .registration document of the car will show the date you aquired it and maybe a purchase receipt for the car. They are being a bit harsh if they need it translated as its mainy numbers and cross referencing of those numbers that has to be done.

Which country are you coming from? When did the car arrive here?
