I havent a clue about vat at all so any help would be great.

Ive got some recent expense reciepts to hand in at work for personal expenses occured for car rental.

Problem is the invoices are in my name and said car rental company wont reissue them in my companies name (talk about poor customer service). Is this going to be a problem for my company in using these to reclaim the VAT ?

Does this matter much ? I assume unless the revenue happened to audit the vat returns this wouldnt even be noticed ?

You can read up on VAT on the revenues website, see link below and can only claim business expenses.

    http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/vat/index.html

The lease must be in the company's name in order for you to claim the VAT. You should phone the car rental company again and you may be put through to a difference customer services person who might do it for you, tell them that you have to get it changed.

    Hi

If the expenses are really company expenses and not personal ones then you should be able to claim them.

Technically speaking they should be in the name of the company but if it is just a case of the leasing company not changing the name on the account I would still claim them. If they are reasonable it is unlikely that the revenue would disallow them assuming they are being treated though the accounts in similar way ie you are not switching things round to suit yourself elsewhere.

Send a fax to the leasing company asking them to change the name to the company to show that you have done all that you can do to put it right.

    Kind regards

thanks guys they are legitimate business expenses, I just forgot to mention at the time to put them in the companies name.

Its not a fortune the vat is only a little over 100 euro but trust me the person that processes our expenses is a pain in the backside and is likely to tell me they are no good and in turn wont pay out the full expenses to me which ive stumped up for out of my own pocket.

good to have something to use as rebuttle to her hence why im asking the question :)

    thanks again

    Hi D3PO,

    A word of warning.

Vat is not recoverable on the rental of cars unless the company operates a care hire company themselves.

The vat will have to be expensed by the company.
