Anyone know the cost of setting up a channel on sky or the process of setting up a channel on sky?

Do you mean getting a listing on the EPG or the cost of setting up a channel? Very different things.

Apparently, a slot of the EPG can cost between £50,000 and £1 million+ depending on the position on the EPG. I think Sky no longer sell slots as their EPG is full but theer is a second hand trade and one can purchase an EPG slot from an existing broadcaster.

As for the cost of setting up a channel, how long is a piece of string?

thanks for reply... cant find anything on net and Im not familiar with the terminology but I would nt want a prime spot ..just so it would be on sky digital..like even if it was in with the religious channels or other channels how much would it cost?..say the channel was set up? Would NTL or chorus be cheaper?

all your equipment would be about 100 grand. Staff would be about 120 grand a year to just look at your out put, Then you have to get a company to uplink it to sky, I know alot of broadcasters use some crowd in Luxembourg, But to get it to Luxembourg it has to be sent over satellite which I know at the moment for sat space is about 2 grand for a football match so Id say its millions by the end of the year..

Then the content is up to you, And depends what you want to show. but id say this will be your biggest expense.. You will need millions to do it..

As afatbollix says (and that's one weird line to be typing) - you would be talking in the millions of euros to get content up. The cost of getting a slot on Sky is just one big charge; the main costs, I'd imagine, would be feeding the transmission up the line to get it to the bird in space. I think there's little or no space left of the main satellites in any regard.

As for Chorus/NTL, no idea what kinda costs they have associated with them nut if it's for a commercial venture, I'd imagine it wouldn't be cheap and it might depend on the content.

Because something that can play on your computer may be totally unsuitable for broadcast.

If you haven't even looked at what kind of content is being broadcast on Sky currently as the most cursory part of your research then, I fear you are wasting time, yours and mine.

And so, for that reason, I'm out.

I find it very difficult to understand how someone who wants his own channel on Sky would be discussing this on an online discussion forum.

I think the lads at Bubble used a 3rd party to handle the play outs and uplinks from the UK.

Want to know how good quality it has to be? a 30 second add is about 5 gigs on our servers. 30 minute program is about 20 - 30 gigs..

Purely out of interest  What are you interested in broadcasting? If that's not being too intrusive or nosey :)

Info TV will sell you a hour of TV for 10 grand.. in that hour you can by law only have 9 minutes of adds.
