    Danny B,

I have to say all these permutations absolutely wreck my head. I currently have NTL but am thinking of switching over to Sky+HD. What would the total once off setup cost + ongoing monthly rentals be if I want all the 'packages' plus all the sports and all the movies for multiple (4 TV's)?

Other questions I'd appreacite an answer to which I can't find from the Sky website are which channels are permanently HD? If we have 4 TV's hooked up will they all have the ability to record programmes and rewind live TV etc? What will the multiroom charge be after the first year?

Sorry if this is a dopey question but I honestly can't figure all the permutations out.

    Regards,

    Ben

What's this with all the changes? September was €99 inc. install. for Sky+HD for existing customers, October it's up to €129 and now it's down to €40!

Im sorry if they wreak your head...but thats the simple version that I spent a lot of time doing that for myself and a few others.

As for your question, Have you a landline in the house for the 4 tv's. As they will need to be connected.

http://www.sky.com/portal/site/ireland/products/equipment/hd HD channels are listed here.

Unless you get either sky+ or sky+hd for each room, you will not be able to record in each room.

The multiroom will go up to €14.75 after the initial 12 months (from €7.37)

I think this might be one offer I will take up(upgrade from standard Sky to HD).
    Only 40 squid.
I'll just cut down on Box Office stuff to cover monthly fee :o

Are there long lead times to get upgraded?

Not if you go through an independent retailer....if you go through sky directly you would be put on a waiting list..

I've gotten a voucher from Sky that will give me and any 'friend' I sign up a free Sky+/HD box. Anybody who is interested can PM me.

    Hi all,

I am a current sky customer and was thinking of upgrading to Sky+. I was wondering whats the most cost efficient way of doing that. From what I can see It will cost me 199 for the box and 100 for the install. Total = 299. That seems like an awful lot of money.
    1. Can a sky+ box be bought for cheaper on ebay?

    2. If so can I just use my current sky card? I would imagine not as the cards are usually paired to the box.

    3. Will sky issue me with a new card for free if I get my own box and install second feed and new lnb myself?

    4. Is there a subscription fee for SKY+?

Would love to get SKY HD but my TV is only HD ready i.e. not 1080p so not sure if it would be worth it.

Sorry for all the questions but just want to benefit from the experience thats out there.

    Thanks

Fairplay for the posting the offer Danny_B.

Looking to upgrade from sky up to sky+HD. Have a few questions though. if anybody can help!

If i get the Sky+ HD box but don't have a hdtv am i able to connect it to the SDtv through the scart?

Also i can't seem to work out, is their any extra monthly cost in using sky+?

And with this offer do existing customer have to get the HD package from sky or is it optional?

Sky have a serious lack of info for existing customers on their site

    Forestman -

1 - Yes a box can be purchased cheaper on eBay or adverts.ie
2 - If swapping out, yes you can use your old Sky card and just ring Sky to re-pair the card or do a call back through a phone line. Click services on the remote, scroll down to system set up, press 0 1 select, go to new installation, select, and select all the way after that.
3 - Yes they will if you are subscribing to multi-room ( 14.75 per month as an existing customer )
Note - to have multi-room you have to have an active land line in the house.
    4 - No sub for Sky+

Yes it would be worth getting HD with a HD ready TV but obviously not as brilliant full HD TV. Having said that, by getting the HD box, you're future proofing yourself.

    Beekay -

If you don't have a HDMI connection on your tv you won't have the HD benefits.

    No extra cost on Sky+

You have to get the HD package for 12 months to get the HD at the offer price.

Sky dont broadcast a 1080p signal - they only use 720p/1080i

So you're as well to watch it on a 720p telly.

    Hi DannyB,

Thanks for the reply. Wasn't critisising your condensed description of the current offer at all, it's way better than whats on the the Sky site but being a complete thicko I still need some info if you don't mind.

BTW I do have a phone line in the house but don't understand what that's got to do with getting a signal from a satelite!!

OK so as a new Sky customer if I go with a full nine yards install (all HD options and all packages including Sport and Movies) with just recording function on the main TV and simple channel viewing on the other three TV's what will the initial set up cost be and what will my monthly fees be both in the first year and the second year when the multi room discount runs out?

Also, will all 4 TV's be getting a HD signal and able to access all the HD and premium channels all the time or just the main one? (2 TV's are HD and 2 are SD)

If this isn't an appropriate question to ask you I'll happily ring Sky and ask them but I'm hoping to get an answer I can actually understand here.

    Cheers,

    Ben

Sky have the phoneline requirement so they can check to see if they are at the same address basically.

If all 4 TV's are getting a HD box then all will get a HD signal, if not then they will not as HD channels will only be available with a HD box..all boxes will get the premium channels as per your subscription.

HD Multi, 3 std 158.00 plus price of an octo which varies between engineers
Package for first 12 months 29.50 on top of your package
after multiroom offer is over it's 59 per month extra

lol, I don't suppose we could get away with going to an indie installer, having them wave the €40 installation fee and just giving us the HD box?

I seem to recall someone posting about doing this in another topic. :p

Answer to that would be slim to none. Sky security have come down hard on us now and to do that would be plain ASA suicide.:D:D:D

The Sky+ box has reverted back to the RRP of €49. The installation has dropped to €40 (was €50)

    Hi guys,

Back again. Am going to go ahead and buy the sky+ box on ebay. Then get a local installer (hopefully!!) to swap out the lnb for a quad, run the cable etc. Then get sky to pair the card. Just a couple of questions:

    1. Any ideas on rough price for installer to change lnb and run cable.
    2. I dont have phone line so how will sky pair card and will they charge me?

    Thanks

    Hi Forestman,

The prices for quad lnb's and to run cables vary between installers.

You ring sky and say that you already have the box and just want to pair the box to the card..they will not charge you. although you will need to get certain numbers from the box (Viewing card number, Version number and serial number of the box). It can take between 2 mins to 4 hours to pair and in extreme cases 24 hours.

No problem, I have no idea what the exact price is as im still waiting on the email for existing customers..ive asked them to send it on again!

basically the up to is the price it can go like before...last month it was €149 for the sky+ box. This month its either one or the other..I do not know yet.

Not according to the so-called "offers" that arrived with my Sky Mag today (which arrived despite being cancelled).

"Free Sky+ box for you and your friend when you introduce them to Sky TV."

"Free" is obviously relative, because according to the flyer, "Standard set-up for existing customers is €100 for a Sky+ box".

If the RRP + installation is indeed €99, this "offer" is a complete con.

The second offer is a more straightforward "is it worth it" type; total cost of getting your "free" Sky+HD box is €400, plus an additional €15 per month after the first year.

Whatever about the second offer, if the box plus installation is supposed to be €99, then the first one is a complete joke!

If installation can be done for €40, why is there a €100 charge for this "offer" ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,249 ✭✭✭kbell

    How..???

When you factor in the wholesale price of of a new Sky + box, dish and lnb.
The cable required and the installers time to drive to your house and spend time actually installing the system then €89 is a bargain.

Remember you own the equipment and after your 12 month (plus notice period) are up you can do what you want with it, ie. sell it on at a profit too.

Does that apply if you already have movies?

I was caught on the HD upgrade because I already had multiroom and was told I needed an extra multiroom to qualify for the reduced installation in the September offers.

The price quoted by myself are for new customers NOT going through refer a friend. Existing customers who go through the refer a friend are saving €199 for the box..ya still have to pay installation. I do not know why the installation is higher for existing customers...it puzzles me still!!

Oh, I know that, Danny....I was just comparing the installation costs of the two.
    Danny_B wrote: »

That's my point; you're paying AT LEAST €60 towards the box, and therefore it's not "free" by any means.

You could argue that there's a replacement LNB and a new cable run required, but if that were the mitigating factor then (a) the "friend" wouldn't be getting the new box + dish + LNB + both cables installed for €80, and the same would apply to a new install, where I presume the €49 for the box includes the LNB + dish, and the €40 install involves installing both, and cabling!

    New customer :
€40 install, includes dish & 2 cable runs; box + dish + Dual LNB for €49

    Existing customer :
€100 "install", includes LNB swap & 1 cable run; box + Dual LNB "free"

    Existing customer's friend :
€80 "install", includes dish & 2 cable runs; box + dish + Dual LNB "free"

Definitely doesn't look like a "free" box to me! And, as usual, the existing customer is the one getting screwed the most, despite acting as a sales rep for Sky......

Quick question, Danny.......leaving aside the "free/€49" box, what "should" the installation cost of the LNB swap and the second cable be ?

As i have said since september 2000 since sky went open to the public. the cost should be the same for everyone, Also this thing of standard install should be done away with.

Jesus Liam, What did Sky ever do to you???

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 679 ✭✭✭Wizard007

Liam, the installation is more expensive for an existing customer because their original install was heavily subsidised by Sky as all new customers are. I know this is really unfair as far as customers who have subscribed to Sky for a long period of time are concerned. Also, Sky run the offers at all differant levels. At the moment and for the future Sky want it so the majority of customers are using HD boxes, that's why the offer for new and existing HD customers is so cheap. Their aim to keep Sky+ and Standard boxes for Multi room usage only.

Some offers run in conjuction with packages, if a customer is getting a sub which includes premiums ( Sky Sports or Movies ) they get 20 / 40 euro off their install. Sky have that made back in the first two months of a sub.

I know it is dissapointing to go about getting your refer a friend offer and finding out you have to pay for install. Sky gives them the offer cheaper as they are a new customer and will be paying a sub to Sky that they would not be paying if they were not referred.

Yup, and they're not the only company doing it. Companies seem to fall over backwards to get new people in, and for the most part do sfa to hang on to existing ones.
    Wizard007 wrote: »

Firstly, if they're that anxious to have people using HD, then ditch the extra €180 a year charge. Simple as. It's expensive enough to get the TV or whatever.

Or else, improve the guide on the HD boxes so (a) you can get rid of all the crap and pointless channels and (b) you can add so-called "other channels" to the proper list. I'd probably "upgrade" to have that option alone, although it's more likely that I'll have to downgrade to do it.
    Wizard007 wrote: »

I've absolutely no problem with that, Wizard. The problem I have is that the install costs more than far more complicated installs, and that means that they're charging you extra so that they can make the box look "free".

It wouldnt be a company secret or competitive info...as I couldnt tell you what everyone else is selling it for...

Aren't they planning on lauching 3D channels in the next year or so? I suspect it will similar to the way the extra charge for Sky+ was dropped when HD was launched - when 3D comes along they'll charge for that and either drop or reduce the HD charge then.

Dublin NTL customer here. Want to switch to Sky+HD with the full nine yards (all packages + sports and movies) and have multi room to 3 other TV's but for the life of me I can't figure out a) how much the install cost will be, b) what the monthly charges will be for the ist 12 months and c) what the monthly charges will be after any "special" prices such as half price multi room run out.

If anyone here can give me those three figures I'd be very grateful. I asked earlier in the week but didn't get the figures.

    Regards,

    Ben

    BenEadir,

Option one - HD in one room and three standard boxes in the other rooms would cost €167.

Option two - HD in one room, Sky+ in room two and two standards would cost €197.

Option three - 2 x HD, Sky+ in room three and satndard in room four would cost €327

    Option four - 2 x HD and 2 x Sky+ would cost €526

    Option five - 2 x HD and 2 x standard would cost €297

All of the above would carry a fee for an octo lnb which is in the region of €60. A fee for phone line runs of approx €15 for room two, three and four.

HD has a sub of €14.95 per month for one HD and €19.95 per month for two.

Take it that you have one HD sub ok? So add the package price for Sky World which is €71.50 and your Sky Home sub, up to eight rooms for €14.75 per month for the first year ( which is all free for your first month )
The total is €101 per month.

There is no sub on Sky+

After the first year is over your sub will be €71.50 for your package, €14.75 for HD sub and 3 x €14.75 for three multiroom subs which is a total of €130.50. What alot of people with several Sky boxes do at this stage is disconnect the sub on myabe one or two boxes and leave them with the free to air channels ie. what you would have if you removed your Sky viewing card.

    I hope this helps :)

    Hi,
I've a quick question about installation.
Basically I've an old sky setup from the previous house owner which I use for FTA but I would like to get Sky+HD. I've never had a sky sub before and was wondering how much it would cost to get SKY+HD with the current offers and if I could get the installer to move my current FTA setup to another room during the install or would I have to get multiroom and a new box to get another room set up? I'm happy enough with just FTA in the 2nd room but if it wasnt too expensive, I could probably go for multiroom and a standard box for a year as a trial.
Would having a referral from a friend make things any cheaper?

Sky+HD box is free with the movies pack with €40 installation. If your going for multiroom a new standard box can be provided for free and the installation will be dropped to €20. Will cost per month €51 (inc HD pack) or €58.37 with multiroom for the first year(Multiroom is half price at €7.37)

First billing month will be free.

You will get the Sky+ HD Box for Sky+HD box for free if you take movies pack for 12 months.

Also, your first month viewing free (new customers)

Multiroom €7.37 per month for 12 months. I think you get a standard box free, not 100%

Get a local installer to do it for you, he will move the FTV Box for you and you can use it as an FTV box or go a standard box or get mulriroom at €7.37 for 1 yaer, then €15.
