I don't bother hanging them, They taste fine without hanging IMO.
I always skin them straight away while warm, they are much easier to skin.
This time of year there are still flies about and they can quickly reduce your rabbit to maggots, I gut, skin and keep them in the fridge/freezer until ready to use.

    Hi lads;

I shoot mine and clean them from the shoulders backwards, I keep the fillets only in the freezer until I have enough for a pie, the dog gets the rest of the meat, and the fur, gut's, and caruss gets put into a bag for a couple of day's, for the next day's shooting of the dirty rotten crow's, so everone get's share in my household
    :pac:he he:pac:

going by the amount of ferriting / years of experiance you have i find it very strange with you asking about rabbit preservation/preperation, i feel it should be you answering the questions:)

so the fox won't take his Christmas lamb's.;):D:):o:(:eek::eek::eek::eek:

i usually always sold my rabbits to greyhound men for taing dogs or released them in other areas with no rabbits were farmer etc said thy wouldnt mind a few and the rest were given as dog food and ferret food. The parents always resitated about cooking them and said no due to mixi so never had no reason to hang th its only this last two years ive started to cook them and nevr hung tem but tere were lads asking me why not so i thought you guys would be fit to tell me why ad i aint an old man im only 26

Right boy's, this evening's quote, which also applies to this post is,
    LET THE HARE SIT.

    Hi Lads,
I hunted with a man many years ago, he used to use ferrets. Now my question is about ferrets and whooping cough. When people requested he used to keep the un-drank milk left by the ferrets from a saucer of milk they were fed, he gave this to people who used it for curing whooping cough. Now I thought this to be a bit mad but the people came back within a few days bearing gifts for the man so it must of worked. It this a common done thing?
If it is who the hell though of doing it for the first time

    Thanks for the useless response.
My apologies, I took it by your title names “Ferret man” & “Ferreter” that you kept these animals and might have some knowledge of this practice.
I'll leave you to it so.

While I have you, I've heard it said that it's not a good idea to feed ferrets rabbit meat as they will be more prone to killing and eating the rabbits in the burrow necessitating them to be dug out all the time. What do you think?

I think if anyone on this forum is brain dead its you pal, openly discussing selling rabbits to greyhounnd men and rereleasing rabbits on ground where their not originaly from, both practicises are illegal and you could be prosecuted for either offence, not only have you incriminated yourself but possibly others with your idiotic post, you show no respect for your quarry, and its obvious from your posts you have little or no knowledge about feildsports or how they should be carried out,and have no place in it,its twats like you that bring are' sport, way of life into disrepute, posts like yours are ussually put together by antis trying to create bad press for hunting to try to portray us to the public as barbaric, which 99.5% are not,it is myopinion that you should be deleted as a member from posting any more of your idiotic not to menyion harmfull posts

While we are on the subject of old wives tales, A rat wont go for your throat if you corner it, or lock its jaw when it bites you! The other tale that they run up your trouser leg, is a tale, But when I ferret rats, I put tape round my ankles...It might be a lie, But Im not taking the chance!

:D i'd go with that too!
Thanks for the reply, I just remember hearing them talking about things in the car when we were on our way to places to hunt. I'd shoot the rabbits with the rifle and they would ferret all day. I just thought the digging a bit too hard for a city slicker like me ;)
I did ferret with them for a while until I was bit once by an over excited ferret, totally my fault but was windy about handling them after that. I was only a young lad at the time.
    cheers,
    Slug
