I want to know how to loose a stone quickly. The no exercise way as that is impossible because I'm injured. I want to know is it better to eat let's just say 3 bowls of shredded wheat a day. Rather than one or two because of your body going into starvation?

My diet is A LOT less. But I think it could be too much, I am constantly hungry.

First, there is no magic quick fix. It all comes down to calories, and it's incredibly stupid to sacrifice nutrition for the sake of a rapid weight loss. There are very few cases where you MUST lose a stone, but a lot where you would like to, or to look as if you have.

My personal recommendation for a diet for someone who is injured is a good low carb diet. That means eggs, oily fish, fresh meat, chicken, lots and lots and lots of green vegetables, olive oil, cheese, nuts. No processed or junk foods.

All those foods are nutrient dense, so you'll get plenty of all the vitamins and minerals you need. Also, once you get the hang of low carb (the first few days can feel very strange), you'll find you feel far less hungry so it will be easier to stick to without over-eating.

    what are your current stats?

what is your current daily diet (in full!)

how quickly do you want to lose a stone? and i assume it is a stone of fat you want to drop? (i.e. not muscle loss from any type of starvation)

I apologize for my message being too broad. I don't need to loose a stone, I want to loose a stone in the next two months.

    My diet would be:

Breakfast: Two shredded wheat with low fat milk and a glass of orange juice.
Lunch: One ham sandwich, normal bread and butter and a bottle of water.
Dinner: Red meat or breaded chicken (varies) with mashed potatoes, carrots and peas.

I know my diet is rubbish, I just need help.

I weigh 11 st. 12 and I'm 5'9. Exercise won't be an option until after Christmas because of my injury, but I hope to lose the stone before then.

Thanks guys so far for your help, greatly appreciated.

ok, based on your stats you are not really over weight IMO....

take your time with dropping weight, it didnt go on over night.

your diet is not bad really, now it could be better, and expect it to be slated by the low carb crew ... I would switch to porridge for breakfast ... have a whole orange or apple or both instead of juice ... lots of salad and lean meat (little) for lunch, if you are having bread then have whole grain .... go easy on the mashed potatoes and breaded chicken (calories!!!), especially as you are not able to exercise at present .....

I don't automatically say you should cut carbs. I strongly believe that the more active you are, the more carbs you can (and should) eat. But the OP is injured and can't exercise, so she doesn't need carbs to fuel her exercise, she needs good nutrition and enough protein and fat to maintain muscle and body function.

If she were a fire fighter or training for a marathon, I'd be recommending brown rice with the best of them.

the OP is also within her normal weight range, and you dont need to be THAT active (i.e. marathon training) to enjoy brown rice ...
As per usual I would sugest a less extreme approach e.g. cut out mashed potatoes and breaded stuff but keep in good carbs ... if you end up not being able to do any exercise then it will all hinge on calories, you need to cut right down if sedentary - prob 1400 - 1500 for sedentary female ...

Corkcomp, please stop referring to low carb diets as 'extreme'. You make it sound like we only eat a tiny proportion of food when a lc diet only eliminates a tiny proportion of the wide variety of available food. Most people in work don't notice any difference in the way I eat at lunch, they just remark that it looks so healthy from all the non-starchy veg piled on my plate.

Also, I agree with Eileen, if you can't exercise then you can't really lose weight unless you cut carbs or fat in a deliberate and controlled fashion and I know from experience which option is much less painful.

oh my god, here we go again, off topic and attacking the poster rather than content, I gave the op dietary and weight advice so if you have a problem with the specific advice I'm all ears, otherwise I. Trust you won't continue to de rail the post

Sorry corkcomp, don't mean to make you feel attacked.

But if you state inaccuracies, expect to have them challenged. This is to benefit all people interested in the subject, including the OP.

FWIW, I recommend, the 'Idiot proof diet' by India Knight and Neris Thomas. I know a person losing weight on it despite being confined to a wheelchair.

read all of my responses to the OP, in THIS thread and feel free to point out the Inaccuracies! as you will see, I pointed out the bad foods and offered alternatives so please try to stick to helping the OP and not push your own agenda (eventhough I feel strongly on the carb thing, I dont try to push it on every single thread) IMO aside from a few small problems, the OP's diet is not too bad all things considered, and she is also within a healthy weight range

Posters suggested a low carb diet as they are ideal when you can't exercise. You insinuated it was 'extreme' which is patently incorrect.

I don't have an agenda to push, I'm interested in every aspect of nutrition but you certainly seem to have a big chip on your shoulder about low carb diets considering that you post on every single thread about them on this forum. I don't go near weight-watchers or low-fat threads as the people on them have made their choice and I don't want to bother them about it.

Talk about dragging the thread off-topic, this is absolutely farcical.

I am truly sorry to the original poster.:o
