Treading Water As Exercise?

Just curious. How good is treading water for exercise? Used the pool today during an open swim (normally use adult only) and basically ended up spending a good bit of time in the deep end treading water while waiting for the lanes to clear.

Is treading water good exercise in itself?

    Treading Water, Fast Vigorous Effort

    Treading Water, Moderate Effort, General

Walking 3.0 Mph, Level, Moderate Pace, Firm Surface

Treading water will be better than nothing. The above links suggest it would have a similar calorie burn to walking.

You can stress differnt areas, like tread with only arms or legs. I am good at it and used to be goalie in water polo where I would be treading with just legs many times, and having to stay up well out of the water. i.e. you do not have to splashing about like a lunatic to burn calories, staying up high out of the water requires a lot more physical power. In the sea I just really tread water.
