Hey sorry if these are stupid questions but I'm going to the gym tomorrow for the first time and just wondering do you have to buy the locks for the lockers at reception? And is it just a myth that girls aren't allowed wear bikinis in the pool? And do you have to wear swim hats?

    Thanks :)

you have to wear a hat alright
You can probably use your own lock if you have one.. But you need a big enough one to fit on it..
Youll have to go to reception first to activate your student card.
Cant help on the bikinis im affraid..
    :)

Essentially yes. I presume the pool have a device for removing locks that people forget the code on. They were €9-10 last year.
And is it just a myth that girls aren't allowed wear bikinis in the pool?
I'v enot seen any rule like this. But indeed, bikinis would be rare.
And do you have to wear swim hats?
Yes, aside from keeping loose hairs out of the filters, it makes you easier to spot in the pool.

I'd try get your own, as they are like 10.50 there. When I went first I just used a locker with no lock.

    I hope so.

What type of locks are they??? They little tiny ones? Pic would be good.

Thinking I might as well make use of my membership, didn't go at all last year! How many running/cycling machines are there? Also is it just a swimming pool they have? Steam room/jacuzzi?

P.S. far too lazy to look on the TCd website!

bought a lock! its a fairly decent one, you'd probably pay a tenner for it in a shop anyway. not too many machines unfortunately. id say it would be kind of bad at peak times. swimming pool has a sauna and steam room but no jacuzzi :(

Really? I think it's pretty big to be honest. It definitely was better before they changed the layout but it's still a decent size. Especially considering there's a whole other weight machine room on the top floor.

About the bikini thing, I have seen girls wearing them there before, however they are uncommon. You definitely need a hat though.

It's worth checking out the lane times too, nothing worse than getting there ready for a swim, only to find the water polo team training.

I honestly don't know why people bother with locks in there tbh. There's always staff around and you can see half the lockers from the pool. If you're really worried, just wrap valuables in a towel or something. Definitely don't buy a lock there though.

I felt you were nearly tripping up over people in there. I'm just used to bigger gyms.

Can you use the machines (Keyser is it?) upstairs? Forgot to ask the girl about that. Will do on Wednesday. LOVE the weights. :)

Yeah they messed with the layout over the Summer, there was more room back then. Also depends what time you go. The evening is much quieter.

Yeah you book the Keyser room at reception, it's free but you do have to book it. Think there's a timetable on their website somewhere.

Can you just go up yourself or do you need to be shown how to use it?

What's the best time to go at? Early morning, late evening?

Yeah I think you can go up on your own, however they may need to unlock it for you. Keyser is quiet most of the time because no one seems to know about it. The main gym area is best after 7pm, between 11am and 1pm and at the weekend.

You won't be let use the Kaiser room until you've been shown how to use the machinces there. They're expensive pieces of equipment and if not used properly can do damage. So I'd advise you to enquire about a Kaiser introductory session at reception because if they find you up there without having the proper training, they'll eat the head off you! But yes you need to book it anwyay and get the code for the door.
Definitely start using it though, much nicer doing weights there than it is downstairs.
By the way, anyone know when the ladies changing rooms are being re-opened? It's a pain in the neck getting changed down by the pool.

    Hey Everyone

I just joined a gym last week, i'm 14st 9lbs and am only 5ft, and female, i'm doing weights and the thread mill and cross trainer, as you can see from my weight and height i am pretty big and need to shift the weight, my questions are, say in about 6 months / 1 year or however long it will take me to lose the weight,( i am also doing weight watchers,) but when i do lose the weight, will i have a sack of skin left to deal with or will that tone up since i'm doing the weights at the gym, and how often should i go, like should i go say monday, wednesday and friday or should i go everyday, like does the exercise "wear off" if i go only every 2nd day or what?

Well they let me go up there the second time I ever went to the gym in freshers week last year so idk...

The men's one was closed for around 2-3 weeks so I'd say it'll be a similar timeframe for the ladies' one.

Yup I'd say so, was last year anyway.

Is there a punching bag anywhere in the gym? I know the boxing club have bags, but I can't make it to any of their training times. Also, I might like to kick said bag, and I don't know how they would feel about that.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 452 ✭✭Aldito

Possibly upstairs because they do karate training up there I think, but unlikely...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,188 ✭✭✭Doug Cartel

Upstairs? Do you mean the ancillary hall? No heavy bags in there, as far as I know. I've never actually ventured up to the second floor though. I guess an excursion is in order.

Also it would be good for people to stop advertising the Keiser Room - it won't be nice and quiet when everyone finds out about it?!

What's the story with the climbing wall? Do you need to do some induction? Is it open gym hours? Do you need your own harness, or are they supplied/rentable? Is there a surcharge for use?

There is a proficiency test to be done before you are able to use the wall. If
you have all your own gear it is only a euro or two to hire the wall out. If you don't have your own gear you can rent the equipment from reception.

How does one go about doing the proficiency test (is it a weekly thing, appointment thing, charged?). Any idea how much renting the equipment costs on top of the wall costs?

What's the story about bringing external (non-trinners) people into it?

The test is a bit of a pain. They are pushing people to take a course with them, but sometimes they allow people to have climbed before to do the test without doing the course. It all depends on who you get in the reception it seems.

I think the harness etc is only a fiver or something. Not that much.

    I'm not sure of that.

I vaguely recollect a charge of about €30.

Does the course work for novices upwards? I havent climbed in years and quite honestly at this point my figue of 8 would probably resemble the knot my earphones always get into (though it wouldnt fail me anytime soon :D)
