I recently "registered" as an existing Sky customer to get Sky+HD
They mailed me back to let me know as an existing customer I have to wait 3 months for installation!
Is anyone else getting this nonsense?!!?

Any ideas on how to speed this up?

Cancel your registration and go to your independant local agent or tv shop

Weird. I decided to upgrade to Sky+HD from standard Sky+ in September; I did this directly through Sky. I had heard all the horror stories about long waiting times beforehand, so I was prepared for the worst when I ordered. Anyway, from the date of ordering to installation was 6 days!! Ordered it on Sept 10th, and it was installed on the 16th. Looking at the paperwork in front of me now.

I have countless people ringing me after they get told the end of november early december by sky... so ur extremely lucky that u got it so fast..

I also think they err on the side of caution when giving out these extra long lead times. There have been threads on this before and I don't think that a majority of people actually ended up waiting that long.

My advice would be to leave yourself on the Sky waiting list and if things haven't happened within three weeks, then try an alternative.

why wait 3 three weeks when most independants would do it in under a week...depending on how busy they are..

I'd say go with your local agent also. More over if it's a swap out - no extra card is needed so a local agent will get you installed within 2 to 4 days.

Also, in todays climate it's really important to keep most of the business in Ireland. Support our own and all that :)

What are the cost implications of going with an Independent versus a Sky installer? Do Sky not use local companies that employ Irish workers, such as Sierra?

Sky don't send over installers from the UK.

VERYinterested - Yes they do, Sierra and Finlays. By using a local agent / kiosk, you are keeping the sale side of the business in Ireland also. Plus, customers find when using a local agent, if they have any problems in future they're sorted out faster and have a number for the agent or engineer who carried out the work instead of logging a service call with Sky and waiting weeks when it could be something simple that's the problem.

Mossy - There was I thinking they shipped them in every morning :p

But how much is it to buy from the Independent versus from Sky? Sky subsidise the boxes and the installation costs, so I would imagine that the Independent would naturally cost more and it is only fair that people asking the questions are given this information also. I have logged complaints and been sorted out very quickly by Sky's local installers.

Of course it is important that the information is given :)
For boxes and installs local agents charge the same as Sky. If your install is outside of a standard install, ie extra cable runs, long phone runs or using phone senders instead of wiring phones lines, dishes installed in out of the way places, extra attic work etc etc you will be charged extra, whether it is Sky Direct or a local agent.

Glad you got sorted so quickly by Sky Direct :) Most people have been given lead times on service calls of anything from one to three weeks.

Grand, thanks for clearing it up. Don't know why I thought an Independent would be dearer than Sky.

A word of warning to all Sky subscribers in what they call 'ROI'
All literature etc, being circulated in this country refers to a VAT increase in subscriptions from January 1st 2010. This VAT increase applies only in the U.K., where VAT is going up 1%.
It took quite a few emails for them to agree that my subscription would not be affected.
So, watch out. A 1% increase would get them at least an extra half million euros a month. Nice pickings.

Yes, good advice, I phoned them up and complained and got a 20% reduction in my sub for 12 months regarding this very issue.

So anyone who lives in Ireland will not pay the extra vat on January 1st?
Im ringing them later about paying my bill and about the hd should i mention this to them seeing as there advertising it all over the Irish website and in there letters.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 923 ✭✭✭VERYinterested

I think it's only people that complain that won't be paying. Just go through to cancellations.
