heya OP, I used to have that car, it does it based on the light outside, so in brightness e.g. daytime, it has a bright background with dark lettering, vice versa for darkness so it doesnt hurt your eyes.

if this is happening just randomly, I would guess the light sensor is broken

Yep it's the dusk sensor, should only change from green to black when it starts getting dark.

    thanks twOnk

coming to think of it that makes sense. when i pulled into the petrol station it changed under the canopy and changed back again when i left the petrol station.

i just found out today that the car has automatic wiper sensor thingys.

    93 corolla hatch to a 05 volvo S40. its a learning experience

congrats on purchase OP, I loved the s40 when I had it, a few other things you might not know yet...

    - holding unlock on key for 6 seconds puts all windows down in car, if its a sunny day and you want to let hot hair out before you get into car its handy
    - holding lock on key for 6 seconds puts all windows in car up, this is handy if if starts to rain and you want to put up windows without getting wet yourself :)
    - has a timing chain so no need for changing timing belt
    - can turn on auto locking of all doors on drive via menu system if you have kids

    hope some of this helps

Just wanted to jump in here. I recently ordered an S40 (a UK 05) from a local dealer, who managed to get one and bring it over. When I was talking to him during the week he was having difficulty with the timing belt on the car. The manual says it needs to be changed at 75k miles, and two Volvo dealers said it needs to be changed at 108k and 144k miles. If there's a timing chain then there may have been a mix up somewhere along the line?
