Could ya help me with my Alesis iO 14?

Hey, hopefully you can forgive the total newbie "HALP PLS" thread, but I'm starting to pull my hair out a little.

I bought an Alesis iO 14 on adverts on Friday, had it working perfectly last night (I was DIing my guitar into GarageBand), and now today it's doing nothing.

I have it set up exactly the same as last night, but when I play, there's no sound, and the level meters don't light up at all. The Mic/Line/Guitar switch is set to Guitar, and the gain is turned up, I've installed and re-installed all the latest drivers from the Alesis website, but I'm getting nothing.

If it's any help, the problems started after I tried recording with a mic. I plugged the mic in with an XLR > 1/4 inch jack, and switched between Mic and Guitar level to try to get a signal, and I got nothing.

I left it plugged in while I was searching the 'net for some clues, and the level meter lights all started flashing randomly - some sort of indicator/warning?

I'm using it with a brand new 15 inch MacBook Pro, which I'm not totally used to, so could the problem be down to me not being familiar with OSX? Or have I broken the interface?

If anyone could help me out, I'd really appreciate it. I thought this would finally be the start of my recording sessions, which I've been looking forward to and saving for gear for all summer, and now there's a bit of a dampener on it :(

    Thanks a million.

Disable the stock card in the laptops bios.

Go to system prefs>sound and see if it's in there. Select it as you main input/output and play something from itunes. If you have sound there the drivers/interface are probably ok.
In garageband go to preferences audio/midi and select it in there.
Make sure you are recording to an audio track and not a guitar instrument track.

I got my fingers burned on an IO2.

The support is ****, the drivers are **** - actually non existent - the driver for my io is 56k, which is the size of the Alesis logo - it's just using windows generic plug'n'play.

On my IO there's ground loop problem - which means the only way it can be used is on a laptop, just with the battery power, and the power cable removed.

It's not complete junk - but it's nowhere near an acceptable standard.

The ground loop means the bastards were too cheap to put a 50p smoothing capacitor on the USB power intake.
