Just a heads up that several bikes were stolen from the Train station in Maynooth on Friday.

Including a rather lovely Navy Trek 4500 series which belonged to yours truly... :( ( My cycle comp had 1500+km on the thing since April...)

I've heard rumours(And i stress rumours) that the stations along that line are getting hit regularly at the moment. I've locked mine at the station in Maynooth regularly for the last 4 years and never had an issue.I had a decent lock on it but from the sounds of it there were targetting the good bikes and took a few.

    how was it locked?
leaving a good bike like this at the train station is extremely risky.

Frame to bike stand through the front wheel.

I'll be honest i have no idea what the brand is. It was one of those multilayered cable locks i bought when i got the bike. It cost about 30/40 quid is all i rememeber.

I didnt ask the other chap who was looking for his bike what he locked his with either but judging from his cycling gear im guessing his bike wasnt cheap either.

listen lads, dont be locking your good bikes up in publin, sleep with them in your bed, and leave them there, buy a piece of crap so if it gets robbed you wont miss it, i would never dream of locking my kona dawg delux up anywer
in public. being from tallaght i keep my bike in my house, far away from dirty fcuking fingers which i would chop off if i ever seen someone near my beloved. id chop them up and feed them to pigs:rolleyes:

Sorry, but you did not have a good lock. The fact that it was a cable lock made it vunerable.

Anything less than an Abus Granite or Kryptonite New York U-Lock wouldn't count as "good" in my book.

I came across a new site http://www.reward.ie and it's free to use if you have a photo of it. The guy that "lost" his Brompton has an ad on it with a reward.

My bike is cheap by most boardies standards (€400), I'm not a serious biker just use it for mainly commuting. Anyway, I spent €80 on a Kryptonite New York U-Lock. I also have an integrated chain & lock. I lock the back wheel and frame to the stand with the Kryptonite and the front wheel and frame to the stand with the chain lock.

The locks cost more than a quarter of the cost of my bike. Might sound like overkill but I don't want some scumbag cycling around on my bike. Hopefully it's too much hassle for them to take my bike.

I know that's not much help to you but if you want to hold on to your bike ya have to spend the money for a decent lock.

If I was targetting good bikes id have left the Trek 4500, no offense. Also If I was after good bikes, I wouldnt be looking at a train station, they seemed to have taken anything with a brand name. Keep a eye out on gumtree etc in a few weeks, they will wait for it to pass over and then flog it.
    Was there any cameras around?

Also e30 doesnt buy you a decent lock, it doesnt buy you a okay lock, it buys you a ****e lock.

Sorry to hear of your bike though, with Xmas coming up alot more branded bikes will be hit. Trek are scumbags #1 choice.

Exactly. Cable locks are only really good as secondary locks (used with a good U-lock, they work well for example). Even the more expensvie cable locks can be got through in under a minute using bolt cutters.

living in tallaght myself i can second that it is an absolute nightmare for locking your bike anywhere for more than 1 minute no matter the lock. not everyone here is a scumbag but there are a lot of them out there, especially the amount of opportunistic little s**te kids around.

    +1 ^

and commiserations to the OP. I've had mine stolen recently. Live and learn. Those cable locks are purely secondary locks, say for securing the front wheel tho the frame and adding a bit of hassle for would-be theif, i didn't know that before but I do now. It doesn't make your loss easier to take but you'll know for the next one. Some of the posts here are unsympathetic but the posters are well-informed and usually well-meaning from what i've read. Get yourself the good kryptonite lock for the frame and have a look on youtube for locking advice videos, you'll also see how easy it is for theives.

    Well live and learn.

Could be worse. Could've happened in the spring.

So im buying a kyrptonite lock next time then?

Can anyone recommend a place to get a cheap second hand one to hold me over? I'm literally talking about something with 2 wheels to go from A to B (Where the value of B !> 5/10km)

i go to college in maynooth and as lovely as the place is i would never lock my bike up at the train station, if i do cycle in i leave my bike at the arts block in front of security with three locks on it

    at OP

If the location from where your bike was taken from was part of the rail station theres a good chance that the theft was caught on irish rail CCTV. You should ask the station management.

Half the battle is having a good enough lock (used properly) and in a good location so the thief goes for an easier target. The cable locks are only to stop the opportunist from nicking wheels, saddles, etc.
