My house is relatively new (5ish years old) and when built there were TV points fitted in most of the rooms - I am assuming these are all cabled with standard co-axial cabling. All of these TV points come out at an external box which is where the cable from the commercial cable TV provider in our area arrives.

Currently I have digital cable TV with the receiver naturally being deside at the TV.

If I install a Sky or FTA satellite dish will the cable run from the dish to this external box with all of the various cables? If yes do I then use a splitter to split the signal and feed it to, for example, 4 of the rooms.

At each of these rooms I would then need a Sky or FTA receiver and then run to the TV?

    Many thanks in advance.

you cannot 'split' the satellite signal.
you would need to install a multiple LNB (4x or 8x) on your dish with seperate cables down to your external box and then connect the cables 1 to 1 to each TV..
you would then require individual receivers in each room.

You will need a separate cable from the lnb for EACH receiver (more if it's a PVR type). You cannot split a satellite signal.

You're best bet would be to run the cables to this pre-existing point and join them into the feed for each room. Would noting that when houses are built they rarely use sat grade cable and you may have some signal issues, hopefully if the runs are short you will be ok.
